Its the same reason why we can't open up .exe files, and windows can't open up .dmg files. Macs > Windows bitches.

clamx for osx is probably your best bet, but osx comes with a built in AV program thats not advertised. apple update the signatures with the software updates. in saying that, there's only about 6-7 signatures in it's database which covers pretty much every osx virus
