In this day in age of overanalysis of every and any stat 29 hours a day on ESPN, I would think Emmitt's superiority in the stat categories would hold more water with folks.  ;D

I give him credit for the NUMBERS he put up. But looking at him purely as a running back, he was very unimpressive. He played in a system where all he had to do is hit he huge hole that was created by the o-line. He wasnt very elusive, not very quick...just strait ahead. He wasnt bad obviously. But clearly if you took him out of that offense and let him run for the lions all those years.....he would have been an average to below average back statistically. Where Barry would still excel for the Cowboys. Thats relevant cus the only arguing point there is for Emmitt is his stats.

It wasnt like the offensive line parted the red sea and emmitt waltzed on through to score easy yards and tds tho.  People forget his durability (which is a huge issue for RBs at the pro level) and his leg strength (which led to yards after being hit).  I mean, if you look at denver, how many rb's in a row had 1000 yards or damn close to it because of the oline and system?  But where are those guys now, or how long did they last?  Not anywhere close to Emmitt.  Barry had the flash, Emmitt had the quiet substance.  If you wanna argue Barry was the better back, cool, but I think Emmitt gets shortsighted because of his oline which is total BS.

Youre right about Denver, they were always able to run the ball. Only Terrell Davis was really all that great. A large part of their success was due to their illegal blocking schemes though lol. As for Emmitt again, I do see it as them parting the red sea for him. I mean, he was running what..and average of over 2 yards per carry before being touched by defenders. Like I said, Im not saying he wasnt good. But Im sure we could name MANY backs who could do what he did in that system. A quick back who was able to run with patience and hit the hole...would go CRAZY with that O-Line. Running backs like AP, Steven Jackson...even Frank Gore.....all would put up just as good, if not better numbers with that O-Line. I cant name ONE back who could have done what Barry did running behind that Lions O-Line...with no other threats whatsoever on offense (Barry didnt have an Aikman, or Irvin, or anyone that defenses had to plan for or stop...but him)...and a team that wasnt playing with the lead most of the time like the Cowboys were. Dont take it as a shot on Emmitt....take it as a compliment to that O-Line  ;)
