Nipsey Hu$$le - Discovering His Niche
« on: January 11, 2011, 03:04:00 PM »
I was not a fan of Nispey Hu$$le.  Call me a hater but I was dismissive of him as an artist.  I simply viewed him as an updated imitation of Snoop Dogg.   I lumped him with Game: Dr.Dre; Jay Rock: Tupac, Nipsey Hu$$le:Snoop Dogg.

After listening to the Marathon I have shredded this perspective.  He is now among a few stand alone soldiers holding against bitter winds of isolation in the West Coast (Blu; Bishop Lamont; Crooked I).  I'm not sure he'll reach his true artistic potential but I hope he does for there is much untapped greatness as there was in Game (never materialized except in a few songs) and Ya Boy (never materialized).

All of this is more or less influenced by one track - Bigger Than Life.  His exhibits soul while telling his story.  Everything you SHOULD WANT TO KNOW about Nipsey is in this track.  It's the single of his career that will be slept on.  Much of his past music pales in comparison.

In a way he's the gangsta version of Drake.  That's to say, he's lived a harder life than Drake but their production styles and song crafting are similar.  The spacey, atmospheric beats accompany both of them exceptionally well.

My outfit ran me a few G's but none of that will matter if you leave
I used to be an Adam with two Eves and shawtys automatically do me
Excuse me, all that happened before you doesn't matter
I'm a vision of the future climbing the success ladder
Recline, in the mean time, twenty three shine, diamond bling blind as I rewind

I have always been a nipsey fan and prolly always will be...the mixtape is sick no doubt...but as you mentioned...gangsta version of drake..hehe...thats the one thing me and the homies were a lil disapointed in...theres a gang of drake biting on that tape...true nipsey puts his own twist on it, but shit wasnt like that before....

bottom line though...his shit is too authentic no matter the style of track, and he always kills it...so its all 100 with me...

i wouldve prefered more og nip style tracks though like keys to the city...

I won't speak too much on his past music because he obviously built his career on it.

When I hear authenticity and heart, I'm all in.  On a track like Bigger Than Life it's there.  I don't care if it's a Drake influenced song writing style and production that Drake blew up on or if it's a west coast style, as long as it's pure.

Another artist who I can't really stand but I do enjoy an odd track here or there is Knocturnal.  He released a track that I loved "Gangsta Lean" (one of my favorites from that year) then he releases a bunch of obscure wack tracks.

I'm looking at my copy of marathon and don't see "Bigger Than Life" on the playlist, can you up it?

I like the drake style he used, shows he can use different styles.

Here's a longer version of "love".

I don't see what could possibly be wrong with being lumed in with all the artists names. I wish I could be.

His early stuff like the Bullets Ain't got No Names series he was nothing but a serious spitter. Nothing like Drake but now I think he has somewhat succumbed to pop pressures and I do think it has taken away from his raw authenticity as an MC.

I'm still a huge fan though and got faith in Nipsey. Still dopest of the young generation.
