Dolphins’ coaches work with Chad Henne in violation of NFL rules

Posted by Michael David Smith on February 28, 2011, 7:53 PM EST

The Miami Dolphins could find themselves in hot water with the league office today, after quarterback Chad Henne revealed that he has been working with new offensive coordinator Brian Daboll and quarterbacks coach Karl Dorrell — in violation of NFL rules.

“Once we signed Coach Brian Daboll, I tried to get into there as quick as I could to learn the offense,” Henne told the Miami Herald. “I’ve been meeting with him for the last month now. I feel pretty comfortable with what he’s teaching and what the offense is going to be.”

But as the Herald‘s Armando Salguero points out, NFL rules don’t allow Henne to work with Daboll, Dorrell or anyone else on the Dolphins’ coaching staff. This is a clear violation of the rules — the same rules that have prohibited Rams quarterback Sam Bradford from working with new offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels.

Henne also said he’d like to become so knowledgeable about Daboll’s offense that he could run his own minicamp during the looming lockout — which would open another can of worms, as players who are active in the union (including Eric Winston on today’s PFT Live) are increasingly speaking out against players engaging in unpaid practices while the owners are locking them out.

Now we wonder whether Henne will be hearing from his union, and whether the Dolphins will be hearing from the league office.

Henne needs to worry about keeping a starting job, not about making as much as he can as a back up, which is what he'll end up as if he doesn't learn the system and become a leader of it. In this situation Henne stands to lose a lot if he isn't far away the best man for the job in Miami come September.

If the NFL wanted 2 really punish the Dolphins, they'd 4ce them 2 play Henne no matter what  :( .  I only seen 1 or 2 dolphin games all season, especially when Henne played.  It was against the Raiders & he sucked.  They still won.  The Dolphins need a major overhaul house cleaning.  And I 4got, why in the world did they hire Karl Dullard for anything?  Are the celebrity owners doing the hiring of people or what?  I kinda feel that mr. Dwayne Charles[Parcells] was an undercover Jet employee when he worked in the Dolphins front office.

And I can't imagine Brian Daboll being the answer as far as improving QB production goes. They brought this guy in to power run, so the QB they'll need has to be safe a dependable. I don't think Henne's days in the NFL are over, but his days in Miami will be soon unless that power run gets them to a 6-2 start and they get to play in January.
