I saw the darndest thing!!
« on: January 08, 2003, 11:50:43 AM »
Alright, so here's the story. Me & my friends had an hour to kill before heading off clubbing, so we stopped at a Burger King to chow down. Anyways, we sit down with our food, and we see this family of 4 stepping in, dad, mom, daughter (11-ish), and son (6 years old, 7 at most). Nothing special, just your average anglo-Canadian family. The kid is pretending to play cop, with his plastic gun and shit, whatever. A few minutes later, my friend tells me: "yo, turn around, quick!". I turn around, and what do I see... this little brat is c-walkin all over the place!! I'm like, "you have GOT to be fuckin kidding me!". And it wasn't like a sorry attempt to c-walk, I mean the kid was doin it to the tee!
I couldn't help but shake my head in disbelief. What a sad sight... a six year old brat (who probably doesn't know what a Crip is), born in Quebec, c-walkin in front of mom & dad & sis at a Burger King.
Then I thought to myself... is this what's become of Crips and the C-Walk?? I mean it's bad enough that the c-walk has been commercialized to the point that fake ass gangbangers *cough*Xzibit*cough* and R&B singers are c-walkin in their videos, but how in hell does a 6-year old kid learn that, especially the way he was doin it? I mean, unless Mister Rogers or Big Bird are gettin their walk on, there's no way that a kid is gonna bother learning the c-walk. The C-Walk has one step further than commercialization.
What a shame. Hip-Pop has KILLED gangsta rap & everything that was still pure. They've taken something as sacred (to a certain extent) as the c-walk, and have turned it into a fuckin dance that is NOW being performed by little brats.
What do yall make of all this? I mean, when I saw this, it just hit me: gangsta rap and everything affiliated with it is no longer taken seriously.

you take this shit too serious, it's just fucking music, gangsta rap or not
and yea C-walking is too commercial, if people dont want others to C-Walk, maybe every other rapper shouldnt have people c-walking in their videos, first they say C-Walking is not a dance, and then they c-walk in their video for 5 mins, of course people are going to do it

True, true...

But you know what? I've had this feeling in my gut for, like, 2 or 2 1/2 years that sumthin's bound to happen to dat gangsta shit as we know it. Sumthin that's gonna make it big again. Not necessarily big like back in the days of Death Row, but big. I think people are gonna realize eventually that the majority of rap that's out there is just a shiny surface. They don't see the real shit, at least not yet. I never thought that bling-bling stuff and all that other shit would last, it was a just a craze. Now it's dyin' down...

I don't know what's gonna happen to this C-walk shit though. It's kinda cool that cats is doing it, but what pisses me (and probably you) off is the fact that they don't know what exactly they're doin. That's why we need artists like Dre, 50 Cent, WC... Artists that do their own thing and something real, not just mimic popular patterns from the past or write some poppy shit with catchy hooks. 'Cause I and all of you know that you can make it real big as a rapper and not sell out, we seen it happen. But right now the situation is what it is and we just gotta cope with it. Look at the bright side: At least you know what that kid was doing. You know you need to check yo self and think twice about shit like the c-walk. You know about shit. You and me just gotta educate the fools that don't know. I know I been doin' exactly that during the past holidays, setting a few things straight in my older bro's head (among other things 'bout the c-walk). And while I might not be an expert on everything, I certainly got him on the right track of things. But that's what I gotta do, 'cause all that hype and glitter will get you fucked up.

It's a shame, niggaz in the rap game, only for the money and the fame...

Sorry 'bout the long post, y'all.

Word. In the 80's that kid would have been MOONwalking in Burger King cause that dance was all over his TV screen. Today he's c-walking for the exact same reason - the rappers who represent the gangs that represent the way of life we say he's "imitating" have done that shit in their videos to the extent that it's lost all significance. Don't blame the six year old kid who doesn't know any better, blame the rapper who commercialised the streets he came up in.

It's kinda cool that cats is doing it, but what pisses me (and probably you) off is the fact that they don't know what exactly they're doin.

Exactly. I mean, 8-9 years ago, who would've ever thought that little kids would be c-walking, as if they're practicing a dance for their play? I'm not here to defend the honor of Crips and their walk, but it just boggles the mind, doesn't it? Kinda like a 2 year old flipping the bird at an adult... it's funny to see it, but you know that it's just not right.
And I still stand by the fact that gangsta rap is just another victim of the ever-growing hip-pop, which takes something like the c-walk for example, and adopts it so that it could appeal to the general audience.

As for the distinction of the c-walk from the blood hop, I don't exactly know what the blood hop looks like, because it hasn't been commercialized (yet) ::)

P.S.: For all of you puttin me down cause I take it too serious and shit, relax. I ain't losin any sleep over this, I just thought it was an interesting topic, and I felt like stating my opinion on it. Peace.
