DJ Quik - Under The Influence Sound Quality??
« on: April 21, 2011, 05:27:24 PM »
Is anyone else Under The Influence sound muffled or not mixed right? I got the original copy when it was released and always thought the sound quality was bad.

Is it just my copy or was this done on purpose?

I know what you're talking about. It got an analog sound indeed. It sounds like real music. Before the pro tools shit.

I'm glad that i'm not the only one, months ago, i find a copy of this album, i'm still buying cd's so i was happy to find this album at a reasonable price, but like you said, at the first seconds something was wrong, Put It On Me is a great example, listen to the one on the Training Day OST and the one on Under Tha Influence it's like the day and the night  :(
So, i thought it was my CD, i found another copy some weeks ago and it's the same thing, the real problem is that the album on mp3 that you can download on iTunes, Amazon, or Megaupload (even in 128kbps) will sound MUCH BETTER than the actual CD... What a shame

Yeah the songs are great but they don't have that crystal clear sound clarity that Rhythm-a-lism did.

And I agree, the version of "Put it On Me" from Training Day sounds sooo much better. Wonder wth that was all about

I'm glad it's not just me. The sound puts me off listening to the album which sucks cause it's a good album

Anyone got a link to the i-tunes version?

i keep reading about this but i can't hear anything wrong with the retai disc at all. we need some of this better downloadable version for comparison. i'd like to hear what the difference is cause there has to be something significant for so many people to be noticing it.

Here is the 2 versions of Put It On Me, first from the Training Day OST, second from the Under Tha Influence, both are CDRip, judge by yourself  ;)

The high end got heavily compressed or cut on the final master, hence why it sounds dull and not crystal clear. There was an advance (it had the original, better version of 50 Wayz on it) that was either unmastered or mastered differently and I personally think it sounds better. I think I have at least some of the tracks from the advance laying around. I'll see if I can find them...

I downloaded this version, it sounds a little bit better but still not perfect.

Quote from Quik about that album:

"I'm switching back from that watered-down, corny sh-- I did with Arista. It wasn't just the whole Roger Troutman thing. Everyone thinks that's what it's about now — you gotta be real clean and linear. [My new album is] recorded in the fashion we used to do. The analog stuff, the old preamps, big microphones. It's a big sound. We're turning big knobs in the studio."

maybe its the reason it sounds like this

thanks man, i can kinda hear what you mean about the high-end, but i'm not so convinced unless we can get the files needed to make a proper comparison.

the one eddz uploaded is terrible quality (thanks for the link tho) 128kbps, sound breaking apart, completely muffled.

and the put it on me on my disc sounds like the better of those two youtube clips, but that's a bad comparison with the youtube compression and unknown source to begin with.

The fact is that Under Tha Influence got a shitty sound on CD, listen to the Put It On Me's youtube link i posted, there is something wrong, the track seems like unfinished and DJ Coma found the problem:
