Lyricism: who's to blame?

I caught this video for a show on Music Choice where they talk about the lost art of lyricism in mainstream hip-hop. Naughty by Nature's gonna be on it, and I heard Vinny blames NWA for starting a trend of watered-down lyrics, which is crazy to me to go after Dre and Cube like that. Most of my friends say the south killed everything that was good about hip-hop.

What's the big deal? This is music, not literature. The words should not be the primary reason you like it. Not like anyone ever confused Naughty By Nature with Shakespaere anyway. It's style over substance. It's always been that way, and it always should be. You want substance over style, then go write a thesis on quantum physics.

The irony is that hip hop never started off as being anything about lyricism. It was simple ass rhymes about how cool you are.
