will the west coast ever see the sucess it had in the past
« on: January 12, 2003, 09:28:07 PM »
I am talking about when Deathrow was on top, and gangsta rap pushed units, was played on the radio, got attention, etc.  It seems as if 80% of its recognition comes from California, and 20% from the rest of the world.  Here is an example I have of two of the biggest names in west coast rap- Dre and Snoop.  Both still get a lot of recognition and  radio play and push units.  Aftermath has what- 2 westcoast artists- dre and cube.  All the rest is non westcoast I think.  And snoop used a bunch of eastcoast producers on his album- when he had plenty of dope westcoast producers at hand (battle cat, meech, daz, warren, fred, dre, soopafly, etc.)  Snoop has also toned down the content of his work to please a wider crowd.  2 acts brought up by dre- hittman and knoc- are a lost cause.  Quik has retired.  Seems like practically no one out of california is into the bay/sactown scene.  Deathrow is virtually worthless now.  DPG is pretty much broke up.  Not many peeps listen to gangsta rap anymore, and that is what cali has always been about.  If rappers change away from gangsta rap they pose the risk of losing westcoast fans (ex. Snoop).  The west always seems to be beefing with each other.  What do u guys see as the future of the westcoast?  Will gangsta rap ever make a comeback?  I doubt it.  What will rap on the westcoast be like in 10 years?  Is it gonna turn into commercialized bling bling murdah uh oh uh oh crap?  Seems like new wc rappers don't even stand a chance.  Ex.  Knoc and hitt, shade sheist didn't sell for shit I don't think, doggystyle allstars sold poorly, E-A-Ski can't even get a record deal cause major record company's know that gangsta rap doesn't sell anymore.  Suge Knight has to use fagget ass murder inc camp to get recognition and give crooked I sum lime light.  What do u guys think?

I doubt it.  The fanbase of hip hop is different. They wanna hear the same songs about being in the club but with different beats.

not on a sustained level, it can be on top for short periods like when up in smoke dropped, i do think theres potential if cards are played right to have a major labal be from the west if snoop makes good decisions with his roster, and suge can stay out of trouble.  theres still a market for hardcore just not like it was 50 cent is about to blow up hard core ect.

Yes... but not with Dre and Snoop. People live off the past too much. When people realize that the past is in the past, then the west will comeback like it was. The west always had better producers, which is key to getting hit records.

Most music in rap sucks right now, period.  I guess they like the crappy east coast stuff over the crappywest coast stuff right now.  Anybody with any REAL talent always gets overlooked, there's only a small handful of peeps at the top of the game, that REALLY are talented.  Most of the talented get ignored (Quik is the greatest example).  Dre, Eminem, Jay Z, Nas, Outkast are pretty much the only people out pushing crazy units that are really super-talented, most of the other guys that are artistic can't get any play.  In Charlotte, they play the same gay south stuff all the time, crap that is just so friekin' ignorant, I'm embarrased to listen to it.  Guys like the Roots, Talib Kweli, Common, etc. do all right, and they're all talented, but they don't sell near what you can with some ignorant song about how big a girl's ass is.  I GUARANTEE YOU I could make a song with some guy shouting "MORE BOUNCE FOR THE ASS, WORTH MO CASH" over and over again, and it'd be huge around here.  People love that ignorant crap, it just blows my mind.  You ask a guy on the street here who he likes, and MANY MANY people would consider Master P classic.  It's disgusting.  The west ain't never gonna be crap anymore, it's over, buried, done. There just ain't a fan base outside cali for their stuff, and a LOT of their stuff sucks right now (my opinion).  Back in the day, everything outta death row was exciting, I rarely get excited for westcoast stuff anymore (well, I do, but it useually dissapoints).  Peace~

true

honestly there is no way it will happen,
Gangsta rap is not taken as seriously or as popular as it was back then, just look at the C Walk, its a big ass joke now ;D

me, Iam stuck in that golden west coast era of 92-98, most of my cd's are from that era and some of the most classic and dopest cd's came out during that era, damn I miss those times, but if its worth anything, cd's that came out during that era have and will withstand the passage of time, they still sound fresh today like if they were released yesterday,
albums by todays artist like Nelly,Ja Rule, or any other of the pop shit well they get old real quickly to me, I cant stand listening to them for long, I just go back listening to my old albums

Seems like new wc rappers don't even stand a chance.

yep..sad but true..gangsta rap is dead cause its played out..that doesnt mean that rappers cant make dope albums, cause they can, but they wont sell shit or make it to the average hip hop head

The fanbase of hip hop is different. They wanna hear the same songs about being in the club but with different beats.

i think in about 5-10 years the west will be as big as the east. in the next few years aftermath is gonna be makin a shit load of money with its artists (dre, em, 50, rakim, cube, etc.) and that means they will be able to sign more artists and producers etc and aftermath will be a west coast def jam. and obviosly they are short on west coast talent at the moment, i think as they get bigger they will bring out more artists like dre did with deathrow

holla

Not the way it's going now...Look at Dre...he's working with cats that ain't west coast...Eminem, 50 and Rakim like them or not are not west coast...Same with Snoop...His album was a primarily east coast album...When you have Dre and Snoop 2 of the biggest west coast acts of all time working with mostly nonwest peeps how is the west suppossed to prosper...You can't keep living of off  2pac's unreleased and remixed recordings and Crooked I freestyles and expect the west to be back on top...I think it's time for a new breed of West Coast acts to come up and carry the torch...

The thing is that back Then  The West Coast was Shinin because Of The EastCoast/Westcoast Bullshit, and The sound was basically the same.So u had Fans saying :"Yo Im  Westcoast" and others saying  "Fuck it BadBoy 4 life" all this brought contraversy and y'all know contraversy is good for promotion and etc.Plus u had Tupac & WestSide Connection screamin WeeeeeeeeeestSiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiide like crazy muthafuckaz. And back there wasnt no midwest and Dirty South sound, it was basically East or West... so u had alot of rappers like Da Brat , Bone Thugs and others actin like they were from the West. Now The its different becuz the sound has changed the fan base has changed but  the WEST is still the same  and thats the problem basically talkin about the same thing with the same production that was on top 7 years ago.So they should start changing their sound. In fact It aint about WEST COAST sound no more its about good music look at Dr.Dre the one who used to create great g-funk beats now he dont give a fuck about the coast he's just makin good music for everybody..Same with Snoop Dogg alot of y'all are hatin on his last album but he was just showing that he Sound good over Eastcoast beats and that today it aint about WS its about good music.
