I2G kicked it with producer/engineer Klypso for a exclusive interview. We discuss his work with Slim Da Mobster and Detox, his upcoming production with Fee and Too $hort, and much more so check it out.

Illuminati 2G is here with Klypso how’s it going man?

I’m good, how you doing man?

Good. Tell me a little bit about how you got your start in music and who are some of your musical influences out there coming up.

I started about 10 plus years ago, I started in my mom and dads garage. I used to freestyle, make beats and that helped me venture off into my profession now, which is making music. I became a mastermind producer and audio engineer, and alot of my influences came from hip hop and rap that was around in the early to mid 90′s.

Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Too $hort, just because I love alot of Bay Area music and I was born and raised in the bay. I moved out to LA when I was about 17, but yeah I stay motivated by alot of different things in music. Whether it is the piano playing of Mozart, or Beehoven.

How did you come up with the name Klypso for yourself?

It was given to me by a good friend of mine. It kind of stuck with me because Klypso is a different name and it is a different type of music. My name is spelled differently then the music is. Calypso music is a island type of music and it is different and rare, much how I feel about my music as well.

How did you end up linking up with Slim Da Mobster and Gang Module?

His management team was trying to manage me 5 or 6 years ago. Fly Guy Management I believe was the name of the company and they brought me and Slim to their recording studio to do music. Slim was on the same page as me musically, we were both goal driven to work with some musical pioneers. Sure enough a year later Slim links up with Dre and he takes me in as his audio engineer and producer.

That gave me my opportunity I have now to work with Dre’s camp for the last 5 or 6 years as well via Slim. That is how I got with Gang Module and Slim, I am a good partner with him.

You mentioned earlier that you have worked with Slim alot. How is his solo album coming together and what is it like working with him in the studio?

Slim is a phenomenal artist, and to me he gave me a chance to grow as a engineer and a producer. He constantly wants to take it to the next level and that pushes me to do the same. He is creating these records for Dr. Dre and Detox as well. As everyone knows he landed the Kush record, he wrote that and I engineered for that record as well.

This guy has multiple records on Detox that he wrote for Dr. Dre and he is featured on the album as well. His solo should be dropping shortly after Detox. He has been mad quiet, he has not dropped a mixtape during this time of recording.

Another artist that you work with there in California goes by the name of Fee. What are you guys currently working on together?

I have been working with Fee for about 7 to 10 years. I grew up with him around this music biz and we have just been putting his record together. I felt like I had something going about 4 or 5 years ago but I took a break and went down to LA for a while and spent more time with Aftermath.

Now I am getting back in the studio with Fee and the music is sounding alot more advanced. So yeah you will be hearing alot more new music from Fee soon and we should be having a mixtape or street album dropping.

Is there any other albums or singles that will have your production on it?

Yeah actually the last few weeks I have been in the Bay Area, spending some time with Chico working on his album. We have one for sure right now that will be on there but the one I am really excited about features Devin The Dude and it is a song I produced for Too $hort.

Being out on the west coast all your life, what are your thoughts on the west coast hip hop scene in 2011?

Man I feel like it is dying down and I think there needs to be more artists and producers like myself around putting in work. Because now it is dying out and people are just trying to make a quick hit record and the quality to me is real low.

It’s another change that we need to adapt to and change and start putting out more quality projects.
