Hip Hop Movies
« on: September 21, 2011, 02:51:47 PM »
Which hip hop/ghetto movies do you recommend?

I have seen below movies, which I consider good or even classic:

Boyz N Da Hood
New Jersey Drive
Don't Be A Menace to South central while...
Hustle & Flow
8 Mile
...

You know some more? And which ones are really bad? It used to be a trend in the late 90s & 00s to create ghetto B movies with rappers starring in it. Never saw one though...

BEEF (All of em)
Rap Sheet: Hip-Hop and the Cops
Menace II Society
CB4

I'm a big fan of hip-hop movies, here are the ones I'd recommend...

The Best of the Best...

1.  Jason's Lyric-  stars rapper Treach of Naughty By Nature.  Kind of a like a hood version of Romeo and Juliet, mixed in with a little Kane and Abel, evil son vs. good son theme.
2.  Menace 2 Society-  Stars rapper MC Eiht.  With cameo's by other rappers like Too Short.  This is the West Coast hip-hop film that came out right around the time gangsta rap was blowing up.
3.  Juice-  Stars 2pac, with cameo's by other rappers such as Treach and Queen Latifah.  This movie even features a DJ battle in which Omar Epps characters set gets cut short as police investigate him for a murder.
4.  Wild Style-  This is the hiphop movie that started it all!  Fab 5 Freddie one of the great pioneers of hip-hop, legendary graffiti artist, and later host of MTVRaps is attatched to this project, and anything with his name attached to it is going to be dope.  This is the ultimate old school hip-hop movie!

Others worth checking out...

-I'm Bout It-  This was Master P's first major film.  The production and direction is very cheap and rushed (like pretty much everything No Limit did).  But still it is worth seeing because it represents another region of hip-hop as it was just bursting onto the scene, and also the beginning of No Limits rise to late 90's dominance in rap game.  And the movie actually isn't that horrible.  It has some compelling drama and story lines.  First trying to rescue his brother from drugs, and then getting revenge for his brothers death.  There's a love interest in the movie as well, and some of No Limits best cuts are well played in montages throughout the movie.  So it may feel like an extended music video and advertisement to buy No Limit albums, but as long as you like the music you won't mind.

-Belly-  Nas got a lot of criticism for his acting in this movie.  And I must say him and DMX were horrible actors in this film.  The movie actually sucks ass, and the Hype Williams direction is way glossy and overdone.   The Score is also pretty weak, as it features mainstream East Coast artists and sounds of the late 90's that lacked substance and meaning necessary to compliment a movie drama.  Yet what saves this movie is it has a strong finish.  DMX has to go undercover for the cops to avoid prison, and in the end dramatically decides to turn his life around in the final scene, which actually comes together nicely.  Nas bounces to Africa and lives happily ever after in the motherland.  (also, they actually play out Nas last verse of "One Love" in the movie which was kind of dope, yet out of place).

-Warriors-  This movie was parodied by the video for D12's "Fight Music" and has been used in rap songs and video's many other times, such as the Eastsidaz "I Love It".  This shows the gang culture in New York in hip-hops earliest days, complete with all the old styles, flavors, and slanguage of the streets of New York in the late 70's.

Comedies...

All the DJ Pooh comedies are recommended, especially if you love the West Coast.  Movies like the original Friday, The Wash, 3 Strikes were all done by hip-hop producer DJ Pooh.  The same producer that produced hits like "New York, New York" for the Dogg Pound.  You can see he's' a talented cat and very funny, an underrated icon of West Coast hip-hop.
