YEAH I SAID IT!  ANAHEIM!  Nobody, even people in the O.C. calls the Angels L.A.  But to the main topic, Albert Pujols leaves the world champion St. Louis Cardinals to join the Angels.  Well at least he didn't completely go from the penthouse to the outhouse if he joined the Marlins.  I wonder how redbird nation feels about this.  And the person who had enough with the Angels cause they didn't try hard enuff to resign Mark Texieria.  Cause it seemed like that the angels didn't wanna spend to win.  Well Arte Moreno sure is spending now 10 years, 250 million.  Hopefully his career in Anaheim isn't like Mo Vaughn's tenure was there

It was the first time in Pujols' career his OBP was under .394 (.366) and the first time ever SLG was under .550 (.541).  I can see value in the first 3 years of the contract for sure, maybe 4 and 5 but after that it will become a burden.

baseball really needs a salary cap, because it is unfair to small market teams like the Kansas City Royals.

The Angels wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy overpaid for Pujos.  The guy had a down year last year and he is only getting older.  Yet they sign him for 10 years!!!!   But since there is no salary cap in baseball I guess it is normal to overspend for big market teams.  Therefore I can't tell the owner of the Angels he was wrong, because if he doesn't mind spending the money, then it will only help there team.  And maybe they will even win a championship.  But there's no way Pujos in his 30's is worth this kind of money!!!

^I don't see why. The Yankees, Mets, Redsox & Dodgers have the biggest payrolls & they always find a way to lose. Three of those teams didn't even make the playoffs last year. Texas is small market. The Giants are small market without a hitter in their lineup. You small market teams just have to start spending.

Personally I like how small market teams don't/can't offer much. It makes the players hungrier and work harder. Look at how Mauer signed a $184 million contract and became Mr. No-Show. I'm pretty sure Kemp and Pujols will go down the same road eventually. Plus Ichiro's contract ends after next year, who knows how much teams'll pay for him (if he's still productive and chooses to remain active that is)?

Also, I agree with your logic. Those big contracts satisfy all the hunger a player will ever have. However, I don't see Pujols falling victim to that. If his numbers ever fall off, it'll be due to age.

You guys are speaking of anomolies and isolated cases where a small market team outperformed a bigger market; or where a high-paid player didn't live up to his potential.

But statistically one of the radio personalities here in Kansas City broke it down.  And if you just go back the numbers and look at the teams that have made the playoffs and won the world series over the past 14 years you will find undoubtedly that the large majority of those teams were from the upper third of payrolls in the league.  Besides, it's just common sense.

True, that's how the Giants shut down the Rangers in '10. But a pitcher can't win if their team doesn't offer any run support, the Angels had Weaver, Santana & Haren and they still lost because who aren't named Trumbo or Hunter couldn't hit. If you needed a young and good pitching staff to go to the top the Yankees, Red Sox and Rangers would've failed countless times...
