What is the biggest problem with westcoast hip hop websites?
« on: April 26, 2012, 01:03:22 PM »
What do you guys think the biggest issues are with most westcoast or even any hip hop journalism/blog/magazine websites?  What could your favorite site do to better serve the fans and artist alike?  What are some things you don't understand why sites don't do or do more of?  How could hip hop sites be improved?  Just something random I was thinking as I was going through some sites this morning.  I'll post what I think a little later...

Whiny users. People that complain about the most inane shit, and often do nothing but complain. Life is voluntary, if it sucks so much just end it. Not talking about anybody in particular but if the cap fits... bust it.  :firedevil:

The biggest problem is that they support mixtape DJ's. You get rid of the mixtape DJ's, you get rid of the everybody-can-rap rappers. You get rid of those, only the good dedicated rappers and some Interscope rappers will get the media attention from West Coast hip hop sites.

A lot of places think that fans still want to hear/hear from the same gangsta rap from the same washed up artists. Let the new blood shine. No one digs gangsta rap anymore unless done right (ala Jay Rock to an extent)....its played out to the fullest.

Mixtape DJ's is just one of many though, but it does open the door for a lot of trash..

Another thing is all that Trap trash, and all these one month wonder fad's, while certain websites dedicate their entire site, and sometimes even forums to it. I think we know Real rap Talk, and how horribly painful that became after a while when you realised that it became a Gucci Mane and Lil Wayne site.. This isn't restricted to Westcoast, but Hip hop as a whole. Just like the radio, and mainstream has become wack, so has the websites too.

Look on any Rap magazine's website, or other coasts, and you'll see the same thing.. This BS fashionry "sell-sell-sell" image, and watered down content and interviews, with the wack BS music being in the background somewhere lol. Age also has a lot to do with it too.

As you get older into adulthood, people running around trying to play big hard men just don't impress you anymore, and that's the problem with our generation of Hip Hop fans

The issue isn't the site, it's the people on it... the problem here is that a lot of youngsters and/or foreigners new to West Coast hip-hop read something on wikipedia or watch something on youtube think that they stumbled across something unknown to the rest of the world, then they jump on the forums and make threads about something well-known for the past decade or so.

That's not a diss to people who are young or are from overseas -- I'm all for people digging West Coast hip-hop and I encourage people to learn more about it if they like it but weren't fortunate enough to have witnessed it firsthand as a bystander to the culture during throughout its growth from infancy to where it is now.  Being young or foreign doesn't make someone less of a fan than someone older or actually from California, the West Coast, the US, etc.  But I can't help but be annoyed as fuck when people who weren't around think that they're schooling everyone else who actually was around on some shit that everybody knows.

This is a problem that seems to plague the West Coast more so than other regions, even if they are similarly talented or maybe even more talented in some cases.  But people just jock that West Coast lifestyle, from other non-West Coast rappers to the fans overseas who wouldn't know what West Coast hip-hop is if it weren't for the internet.

As far as hip hop sites go, you stick with what you know. And as far as dubcnn is concerned, I think they do a damn good job of that. I mean I would like to see more exposure and coverage on acts on the west, east of California but I am sure they try their best to cover who they can.

My main issue with websites is most seem to be on some pay for play BS like the radio now. It does not seem to be with most a effort to find or cover the next big thing until some other site or publication found them first and they just don't want to look like idiots. For me just give me some good news, content, music, interviews, a forum but not mandatory and lets discuss good music.
