i'd take these reviews with a grain of salt. nas' beat selection has been sub-par with his last few albums

His production fits his style.

Agreed.   Less is sometimes more with the beats.  I think Nas has always generally had dope production, that fit him well.   And that includes his last few albums.  The "Nigger" album I only liked the first half of that album.  But Hip-Hop Is Dead I thought nearly everyone of the beats was fire, and that album was classic top to bottom.

I mean, yeah. But I never really listened to Nas for his beats, just his lyrics.

His production fits his style.

i don't necessarily agree. if he had production that was as great as his lyrics, then he could make another great album. i think we can all agree nas has been making some bad choices when it comes to picking out beats for quite some time now.
