I thought of this because I am starting to skip music with messages I really dont agree with and I hated the bars Cassidy just did on the Breakfast Club.
They was like ''yo Cass, can we hear some SHIIT?!?'' His reply ''Naah, I wanna thank god'' and then he starts rappin bout the lord. wtf...

I cant listen to a song with somebody thankin god in every verse or talkin bout how amazing weed is and he spends 10k a month on that shit.


So yeah.. the question is: do yall fuck with music you cannot relate to at all?

Every song, or artist has to have that one thing that you can relate to.  It doesn't even have to be much.  Like I could disagree with a lot of stuff but as long as they have that one thing I can relate to that I will definitely be able to feel it.

On the other hand a rapper like Masta Ace, even though he was rich and successful at the time he made INC Incorporated in 95', he still had story lines lines like...

"Lap dance, Lap dance, baby there's a rumble in my pants/ Just checked my wallet/ no more doe/ went outside to check my ride/ shit was stolen/ but we gone catch they ass on the B side".

Now even though I don't go to strip clubs I can still relate to that shit.  Because he's rapping about being at a strip club and running out of money and having to leave, then finding out his car was stolen.  That's some shit that any common man could relate to.   In fact all his story lines on that album, about cruising, bumping his stereo, trying to run game on women, are all stuff that his fans could relate to.

I don't understand why rappers today don't feel they have to relate to the listener, yet somehow they are still selling albums in spite of that.  Back in the 80's and 90's rappers always had to spit some shit that headz could relate to.

 Yeah i always skipped that "black and proud" from the Brand Nubian reunion album.
 Songs that are too pro black or too religious i will skip.

 And i wont compare my child hood to being black and in American and in "the hood" but i always related to hip hop because i smoked weed, drank, parties, graffiti, getting harassed and searched by police, being in a crew, sitting at parks with a tape deck(lol), having "beef", being around drugs, weapons, dropping out of school, being arrested, working in factories, ETC.
 So related to it at least to SOME extent. In ways i did, on another level. And now i live in a shit area where ive had clothes stolen off my clothes line, petrol syphoned out my car, shit stolen out my mail, kids running around screaming, ppl yapping in foreign language, etc.
 Oh i used to rap too. lol.
 When i was like 8 or 9 i just liked rap cos they swore tho.

I fuck with good music.... If it's really good music, it'll find a way for you to relate to it, it can be the lyrics, the beat, the flow, whatever.... Obviously, me being a white guy from Norway (and I'm talking rural fucking Norway here), there's alot of things rappers talk about that's in no form or shape relatable to my life, but if it's good music, I'll relate to it... So even if I'm not a black mobster with cancer; I still think CPO's verse on Gangstanostra is one of the dopest things ever made, and Poetic's verse on One Life gives me the chills everytime....

Yes.
I enjoyed a lot of Ma$e's shit when he was in that religious "reborn" phase. Because I'm part Asian and not buddhist I have had absolutely no religious involvement (except maybe trolling Jehovah's Witness people when they rape my doorbell) in my life so far so I couldn't relate to the songs but I still liked Ma$e's delivery and the beats were too banging for me to honestly give a fuck. Plus it's not like I could relate to most of his stuff before about drug raps and sleeping with ho's since I never was and never will be signed to Bad Boy Records.

I also can't relate to Young Sam since he still wears skinny jeans thinks the Jerk Movement is in full effect (even though he's pretty much the only guy still doing it), but I like his songs since they're catchy, short and perfect for parties.

I think it's about the emotion behind the message more than anything else. For instance, if I listen to "Love In, Love Out", do I not relate because I've never been kicked out of the Firm or felt betrayed by Nas? Course not. But if you look at as the idea of a loyal person who feels damaged by putting his heart out there for people and having that used to his disadvantage then I think a lot of people, be it black, white, Asian, can relate to that. You might not be a drinker or a heavy partier but you dig the idea of just letting it go and having a good time. And in some cases, hey, it's just music and you're just having fun. I think the only time music fails for me is when I feel the artist himself or herself doesn't believe in what they are saying.

 ^ yeah i think we can all relate to songs about our friends and about people who have betrayed us or not been who we thought they were or they changed.
 Everyone's been through hard ships so alot of rap songs we can all relate to because of our own experiences.
 And now ial older alot of shit that i used to listen to just brings back memories of "the good old days" yeah i wasnt out dealing and shooting but that sort of music brings me back to those days when i loved gangsta rap so much.

lol I was just making a shitty joke, Music is entertainment nothing more. Of Course I think the stuff you can relate too is gonna be your favorite though. Which is why a lot of peoples favorite tracks aren't the ones talking about ultra banging drive bys, thuggin and shit but the relate-able topics of just living.
