LOL @ Mark Cuban
« on: April 02, 2013, 10:04:44 PM »
LOS ANGELES -- Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban would be willing to give Baylor women's star Brittney Griner the opportunity to prove she could play in the NBA.

Cuban said he would consider selecting Griner, a 6-foot-8 three-time All-American and Big 12 player of the year, in the second round of the NBA draft. If the Mavs don't draft her, Cuban said he would have "no problem whatsoever" inviting Griner to try out for a spot on Dallas' summer league team.

News, notes and analysis of the Mavericks from ESPNDallas.com's Tim MacMahon, Richard Durrett and our team.

"If she is the best on the board, I will take her," Cuban said before the Mavs' Tuesday night game against the Los Angeles Lakers. "I've thought about it. I've thought about it already. Would I do it? Right now, I'd lean toward yes, just to see if she can do it. You never know unless you give somebody a chance, and it's not like the likelihood of any late-50s draft pick has a good chance of making it."

Griner dominated women's college basketball with her size and athleticism, scoring 3,283 points and blocking 748 shots in her career. She also had 18 dunks, including 11 her senior season.

A woman trying out for an NBA team is not unprecedented. Former UCLA star Ann Meyers tried out for the Indiana Pacers in 1979.

Cuban said it's difficult to evaluate whether Griner could play in the NBA because of the caliber of her competition, comparing it to scouting players from small schools. However, Cuban said he was absolutely serious about at least extending an invitation for Griner to try out this summer.

"She'd still have to make the team," Cuban said. "I'm not going to carry her just to carry her. I don't think, anyways. But I certainly wouldn't be opposed to giving her the opportunity."

Cuban acknowledged that Griner playing in the NBA's Las Vegas summer league would have tremendous marketing potential.

"It would, wouldn't it? See how she could do?" Cuban said. "That'd sell out a few games."

Oh man, non-stop great comments on the "ESPN" comment section

"She was the butch girl in the movie Dodgeball that got busted for having low-grade beaver tranquilizer in her blood."

"Why wouldn't Mark want to draft him?"

"Imagine if she (he) joined the team and showered with everyone else....... "

"Brittney Griner would manhandle Pau Gasol"

"Now Bosh won't be the only one with sore ovaries."

"I would give him a shot"

"why would she go to the nba? When she can stay in the wnba be the top pick and make hundreds of dollars."

"When Brittney dunked on other females, I wonder did they see her sack ."

"Sasha Vujacic played. why not Brittney?"

LMAO

She would get tossed by Luke Walton and Steve Novak. It's hilarious he said it, even though he's always been an attention whore like that, but it couldn't happen. She'd get destroyed.

It obviously won't happen but I would pay top dollar for one game with men. D-League, NCAA Div 1, 2, or 3. Hilarity would ensue.

she would be a GREAT goon off the bench because what kinda guy is gonna complain about a woman fouling them? :D

why not pick her up as a 12th player?  she's better than the worst players in the league  (guys like Matt Carrol who somehow are still around)

No joke. Think about it: Durant is considered frail and dude's listed at 6'9 235, Griner is listed at 6'8 208. She would get destroyed. But I pray that she will someday appear in a men's game for the lol factor.

doesnt she play center, as well? in the nba, she'd have to be a small forward, at best. doubt she has the quickness, dribbles, or handles for that either.

lol think about the gender factor, its going to be hugely controversial.

when we actually play fair and play physical, they'll cry discriminating, same when they play too soft.

just dont do it, as men (for most) we cant go all out on a female (cant say when she schools you, you'd do it) but  cmon its retarded.

its black and white, play too soft theyll say the league is sexist, play too hard they'll say the same.

im sure its just a propaganda/(whats the word when the media hypes it or go to the media for shine?)   to sell more mavs tickets, im sure dudes hurting with the mavs doing so horribly, they're not the lakers, i wanna see how many loyal mavs fans in there that still watch and loyal, theyll probably just start watching the rangers.

I remember when I was a freshman in highschool we scrimmaged the girls varsity team.  It was a joke, the coaches had to tell us we weren't allowed to steal the ball anymore because they couldn't even get it past halfcourt, and if we ever missed a shot there was no way they could keep us off the offensive boards.

Brittney couldn't even play men's highschool basketball and be successful.

Yeah, one of my friends goes to Gonzaga and plays in an intermural league there, there's girls from the basketball team on there and he says they're not allowed to play help defense on them or anything like that.
