Music industry biggies Dr. Dre & Jimmy Iovine donate $70M
« on: May 15, 2013, 03:31:17 AM »
Hip-hop mogul Dr. Dre, real name Andre Young, and music industry entrepreneur Jimmy Iovine have donated a combined $70 million to create a new institute at the University of Southern California.

USC announced Tuesday night that the huge gift will be used to create the Jimmy Iovine and Andre Young Academy for Arts, Technology and the Business of Innovation.

The academy will provide a four-year program for undergraduates whose interests span several fields from marketing to computer science to the arts. It will include one-on-one faculty mentoring and interaction with entertainment industry luminaries.

Iovine is co-founder of Interscope Records, chairman of Interscope Geffen A&M and a mentor on "American Idol."

Dr. Dre is best known as a producer and solo rapper and has his own label, Aftermath Entertainment.

I'm wondering why they donated to USC in particular though... neither of them went there or really have any affiliation.  Additionally, David Geffen donated a lot of money to UCLA, and Interscope merged with Geffen, so I'd have thought Jimmy would also throw money in their direction.  Either way, good for the school and the students.

LOL

Also part of the course is probably like, "Make 500 beats for Dre and ghostwrite 500 songs".
And then Dre will pick the best ones and put his name on them.

It's basically some sort of beat-farm.

Dre and Jimmy did an interview for this, mentions Detox and the NWA movie:

Quote
And, does this program mean that Detox will be further delayed?
Dr. Dre: No, I'm more inspired to go back into the studio now. Beats is rolling, this thing is happening, and it's incredible. Now I'm ready to go back to my first love.

Jimmy Iovine: You know he was always making music. You know just look at Kendrick Lamar. If not for Dr. Dre, Kendrick Lamar wouldn't be what he is today. I think Kendrick Lamar is arguably the most important rapper to come in a long time. In my opinion, as far as Dre's business is concerned, I think he is doing a lot for hip-hop, with Kendrick Lamar.

Dr. Dre: I'm going back to the studio. Not for any specific reason, but just to record because I love to record music. I'm going back in and hopefully the next Kendrick Lamar or the next Eminem walks in the door and I can work with that artist. I'm going to record forever.

I'm hoping you're not throwing all that stuff you're recording away.
No, it's not thrown away. I just love to record and it is there for whoever comes in, and if the music fits. I have tons of music stashed.

I spoke with Ice Cube about the upcoming NWA movie. Could you tell us anything more about it?
Dr. Dre: We just go the green light from Universal. I was just with Cube and F. Gary Gray yesterday writing the script, so it looks like it's really happening. Gary is directing the movie. It's going to be a true story. It's going to be based on all the true events that happened.

But it's not going to be a documentary?
Dr. Dre: No. But yeah, I think it's going to be great. Now that Gary is on board as director and it's at Universal, I think it's going to be incredible.

^ Yeah. It's not like USC doesn't have money. Maybe they could've donated money to local high schools or something throughout South LA.

i guess they did it because their tax advisor said it, rich people do many things to safe taxes. The richer they get the more greed and America is a wonderful place for rich people to pay minimal taxes.

Seriously, who cares if their motivation is to get tax deductions?  It's not like average people don't look for tax deductions either.  But at least what Dre and Jimmy are doing is donating a LARGE quantity of money to a school... not that I necessarily agree with where it went or think it was the best way to donate.

Bill Gates is one of the largest contributors by far to education.  I could care less if he's doing it to try to drop down to the next lowest tax bracket for the ultra-wealthy, the money is going toward a good cause.

What you should be criticizing instead is rich people buying Fisker and Tesla electric cars for the tax credits.
