Since 47, the Yankees had a stretch where they won appeared in 6 of the 7 WS and won all 6. Their next stretch was 4 straight WS appearances and went 2-2. Their next stretch was 5 straight WS appearances and went 2-3. They went a while without an appearance, then hit 3 straight and went 2-1. They had another cold streak and went 0-1. Their next stretch was 4 out of 5 WS appearances and winning all 4. Then, most recently, winning in 09.

1st off, lemme start by saying, the laker have 17 championships as a sports franchise, not 16...they won a title with george mikan in the nbl before the merger with the nba. secondly, lemme get this straight...the yankees have 40 world series appearances in 111 years, while the lakers have 32 finals appearances in 65 years and you still dont see how the lakers have a higher success rate?
and more importantly, 17/65 or 27/111, which is better?

NIK acts like the talent of players in the 1940s for a few of those Laker championships is anything. the NBA took a good 5+ years to actually be something. In the late 40s to mid 50s the NBA was just an infant league while major league base ball was America's #1 sport by far.
now the #1 sport of course is football and then MLB and basketball can battle out the meaningless title of second place. but baseball was always america's #1 sport when the Yankees were dominating before Mantle, Berra and Ford all retired. the Lakers won't be reaching 17 titles anytime soon, let alone 27.

Not many actually count the title in the NBL, but ok. Doing the math, the Yankees percentage of titles won is actually a lot closer than you would think. Also, the Celtics have 17 and have been around as long as the Lakers, so their rate is actually the same:
Yankees: 24.3%
Lakers: 26.1%
Celtics: 26.1%
Less than 2% difference. Overall, when you look how much more dominant the Yanks are than the next team, it's not even funny. Yankees have more wins than every other team has appearances in the World Series. The Celtics have as many wins as the Lakers in 10 less Finals appearances.
No matter how you slice it, the Yankees are the top franchise of all time.

The main reason I'd put the Yankees over the Lakers is because for the longest time, baseball was more popular than basketball. So because of that the Yankees not only have legends of baseball, they have HUGE American legends. Babe Ruth, Yogi Berra, Lou Gehrig, Whitey Ford, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle. These are not just names that live in baseball history, these names live in American history. The Lakers have Magic Johnson, and maybe Jerry West. But the Yankees have a Murderer's Row if you will of people who influenced the pop culture as a whole, Babe Ruth being the largest both figuratively and literally. And if you don't know where that Murderer's Row name came from, then you can't speak in this conversation. And once you have heard this term, then you'll realize how often you heard people say Murderer's Row in just everyday language.
Look, the Lakers are up there, they are somewhere next to the Packers, Bears, Cowboys, Celtics and Dodgers battling for #2. But the Yankees are so far ahead because baseball was American's past time for so long, because they have larger than life legends, and because the Yankees have even influenced everyday language beyond even Murderer's Row. It just is. The Lakers have a long way to go before they can catch up. But to call them second best, that's not to far off.
