1st off, lemme start by saying, the laker have 17 championships as a sports franchise, not 16...they won a title with george mikan in the nbl before the merger with the nba. secondly, lemme get this straight...the yankees have 40 world series appearances in 111 years, while the lakers have 32 finals appearances in 65 years and you still dont see how the lakers have a higher success rate?

and more importantly, 17/65 or 27/111, which is better?

Not many actually count the title in the NBL, but ok. Doing the math, the Yankees percentage of titles won is actually a lot closer than you would think. Also, the Celtics have 17 and have been around as long as the Lakers, so their rate is actually the same:

Yankees: 24.3%
Lakers: 26.1%
Celtics: 26.1%

Less than 2% difference. Overall, when you look how much more dominant the Yanks are than the next team, it's not even funny. Yankees have more wins than every other team has appearances in the World Series. The Celtics have as many wins as the Lakers in 10 less Finals appearances.

No matter how you slice it, the Yankees are the top franchise of all time.

lol@"but ok"...i dont care who counts it or not- it's not counted as an NBA title officially, but it's still a title for the Laker franchise. the funny thing about all that shit is that the NBA recognizes BAA titles, but for some reason, NBL records were not included in the merger. see, before the NBA, there were 2 leagues, NBL and BAA, with the NBL being the more competitive of the 2 leagues... BAA was all white, while the NBL already had interracial play in the 40's. in 1949, the NBA was formed by absorbing 7 original BAA teams and 9 original NBL teams (3 of the 9 NBL teams were already absorbed by the BAA in previous seasons)......so if there were more NBL teams than BAA teams in the merger, why are BAA titles counted and NBL titles not? why? it's a technicality, thats why. because the merger was headed by the BAA, they didnt consider the NBA a new league...they went out and used the same BAA league offices and simply changed the leagues name to the NBA instead of starting a new league all together. it was all based on convenience. so technically, the NBL titles dont count as NBA titles (though they should), while BAA titles do....but as far as the Laker franchise goes, that title very much counts as a Laker franchise title. it was Mikan's first title and it was not only in one of the two leagues that helped form the NBA, but also the more successful and competitive of the two.

and u also just proved the lakers are a more winning franchise than the yankees with those stats....lol. even if it's just 2% more, thats still a higher success rate. this aint about how much better the yankees are than the next best baseball team, it's about what franchise is the most successful in ALL of sports. and considering the lakers success rate is 2% greater, thats enough to validate the GOAT franchise title....celtics are far behind the lakers because a.)they have way less conference titles, playoff appearances, had a 20 year period where they were sub-par, and won a majority of their titles in a 10 year span, in the 50s and 60s, when the NBA was much less competitive and had way less teams. to be the top franchise of all time, u gotta be the most successful, and at the end of the day, everything points to the lakers having the highest success rate.

--- Quote from: M Dogg™ on October 02, 2013, 08:46:15 AM ---The main reason I'd put the Yankees over the Lakers is because for the longest time, baseball was more popular than basketball. So because of that the Yankees not only have legends of baseball, they have HUGE American legends. Babe Ruth, Yogi Berra, Lou Gehrig, Whitey Ford, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle. These are not just names that live in baseball history, these names live in American history. The Lakers have Magic Johnson, and maybe Jerry West. But the Yankees have a Murderer's Row if you will of people who influenced the pop culture as a whole, Babe Ruth being the largest both figuratively and literally. And if you don't know where that Murderer's Row name came from, then you can't speak in this conversation. And once you have heard this term, then you'll realize how often you heard people say Murderer's Row in just everyday language.

Look, the Lakers are up there, they are somewhere next to the Packers, Bears, Cowboys, Celtics and Dodgers battling for #2. But the Yankees are so far ahead because baseball was American's past time for so long, because they have larger than life legends, and because the Yankees have even influenced everyday language beyond even Murderer's Row. It just is. The Lakers have a long way to go before they can catch up. But to call them second best, that's not to far off.

LMFAO... oh God. I already know where your going now. About 2-3 pages of why the Packers, Bears and Dodgers don't belong in this conversation and how the Lakers are still better than the Yankees.

Let me just give a quick run down of all my sports top 3 franchises, and I'll leave it alone.

MLB

1 Yankees, more World Series wins (27) than the next teams World Series appearances (19)
2 Dodgers, also part of American lore, but for always being the runner up to the Yankees in many years. Tied for 3 all time in World Series appearances (18 though only 6 wins), home of legendary players including Jackie Robinson.
3 Cardinals, second most World Series wins.

Honorable mention: Giants, second most World Series appearance, and like the Dodgers, always there but lost. Only difference is that the Dodgers have more players who are known in American culture, the Giants do have Willie Mayes though.

NFL

1 Packers, more NFL/Super Bowl titles than any other team. (11 NFL titles, 4 Super Bowl titles)
2 Dallas Cowboys, tied for most Super Bowl appearances (5 wins, 3 loses), called America's team.
3 Bears, best all time regular season record, second most NFL/Super Bowl titles. (8 NFL titles, 1 Super Bowl title)

Honorable mention: Steelers,  most Super Bowl victories (6 Super Bowls), though didn't make the playoffs for 25 years in the pre-Super Bowl era.

NBA

1 Lakers, appeared in more NBA finals than any other team (31). Stars include Magic Johnson and the Logo. Only missed the playoffs 6 times in 66 years.
2 Celtics, most NBA championships in NBA history. (17, Lakers first title is not recognized by the NBA so they officially have 16), and had Bill Russell and Larry Bird.
3 Bulls, third all time in NBA championships, and had Michael Jordan.

Honorable mention: San Antonio Spurs, very consistent as a competitive team, forth most all time in NBA championships.

YOU'RE A COMPLETE IDIOT, BRO....FOREAL LMFAO

THE LAKERS ONLY TWO STARS ARE MAGIC JOHNSON AND JERRY WEST? :stupid:

SOMETIMES I JUST FEEL LIKE REACHIN THRU THE SCREEN N SLAPPIN THE SHIT OUT OF U..IF U DIDNT CALL URSELF A LAKER FAN, IT'D BE ONE THING. BUT U DO...AND U LIVE IN MINNESOTA. U NEED STRONGER REPRESENTATION AND BETTER PROOF OF UR FANDOM THAN WHAT U PROVIDE ON THIS FORUM, SUCKELL.

whoisthis:
It's not counted though. Just like ABA titles. When a company is absorbed, it's history is not recognized.  The reason the NBA recognizes the BAA is because the NBA is the same company. The BAA took over the NBL and then changed their name to NBA. That's what happens in Business.

Only thing that matters is what's official. Officially the Celtics have 17 titles and the Lakers have 16. When you look at the official numbers the Lakers are at 24.6% (.3 higher than the Yanks).

Then you can look at the Celtics and Lakers head to head in the Finals. Or that the Lakers have needed 31 appearances to get to their number, whereas the Celtics have not. My point is, when you break down "All Time" it's more than just the raw number of  titles. It's about dominance.

You can't dismiss how much better they are than the next team. The Yankees do not have anyone close to them in their sport. That is dominant. The Lakers, as stated, have less official titles in more appearances than the Celtics. That is not so dominant.
