The fact that he repeatedly states he was work for hire means just that, he wasn't part of the team and he was paid for his time - whether that time was used to create melodies, guitar work or eat fried chicken, he was paid for the time that he spent at the label and whatever he made was classed as "work for hire" meaning he has no rights to it as it was made on DR's dime.
