Most cluth player in the NBA according to GMs...
« on: October 24, 2013, 02:16:57 PM »
Durant - 39.3%
Kobe - 32.1%
Carmelo - 7.1%
LeBron James -7.1%

What do the stats say?

In the final 10 seconds of a game where their team was +/- three points, Durant was 0-of-5 last season but he did get to the free throw line for nine shots (hitting 8), while Kobe was 3-of-9 from the field and got to the stripe eight times (hitting 7). To throw the other guys in there, LeBron James was 4-of-10 from the field with four free throw attempts, while Carmelo was 0-of-4 with just two trips to the line.

The guy I would give the ball to? Joe Johnson of the Nets — 4-of-4 from the field plus he got to the line 8 times. He’s been clutch. But that Durant guy is still a good call.

Clutch isn't real. Statistically last five minutes of the game LeBron and Melo are head and shoulders over the league. But niggas are lost in this perception that clutch = hitting a shot in the last five seconds of a game.

I've seen Derek Fisher hit a shot with .3 on the clock. Guess he's just absurdly clutch. ::)

That chart is since 2006 "clutch" meaning last five minutes of the 4th quarter + overtime (if needed) where neither team has more than a five point lead.

Sorry for it being askew but you clearly see LeBron is more efficient.

"LeBron ranks above Kobe in seven of eight samples".

I knew Cham was going to come in here and defend his hero. All that's left is for NIK  to defend Kobe and this thread will be complete.

I wasn't aware of this "cluth player" stat. Guess I don't really keep up with all these new advanced stats  ;D

There's nothing to defend or respond to. Those are the facts. It's just the perception Kobe is so clutch because he has game winners.

But to be fair, it's not like those stats say Kobe sucks and LeBron is so good. The stats are fairly close and you can't really go wrong having either one of them late in the game on your team. All I'm saying is the stats say Bron and there shouldn't be a consensus that Kobe is the "no-brainer" pick.

The question was who do you want to take the final shot it the game and the GMs picked Durant. So Kobe is clearly not the consensus "no-brainer" pick, so what exactly are you trying to refute?. And if you want to bring up facts by using statistics, the article clearly states that none of the top 4 picks are that clutch statistically. Joe Johnson is the most clutch player, not LeBron.

Well I was going strictly Kobe/Bron. The numbers still say he's more efficient than Durant too.

I didn't know it was "last shot", I just read the title of the thread and peeped the percentages. I guess last shot, I understand. They're both better pure "shooters" than LeBron. I'd rather Ray Allen take a "shot" over all three of them though.

I think the GM's got it right. I am torn between Kobe and Durant on who I would want taking the last shot i'd probably give the edge to Kobe because of precedent he has set Durant is getting there and might be the best pure scorer in the game today but those are the two that stand out for me with everyone else well below them for taking the last shot. Lebron/Melo to me aren't guys I'd give the last shot to.

anyone who says "clutch" is not real has absolutely no clue what theyre fuckin talkin about...clutch is not just in basketball, it goes for everything in life. it's about when the pressure sets in and the moment becomes real, how do u react? some shy away and defer (lebron), some freeze up and fail (chris webber), and some excel and deliver (kobe)......thats all there really is to it. it could be that one big business meeting that you've been waiting for ur whole life for. if you're clutch by nature, you'll deliver when that moment comes.

now, i can give a fuck less about stats. stats never tell the whole story. never. one can manipulate stats to show that jerry stackhouse was a top 15 player all-time in his prime. bottom line, the eye test is what true basketball purists use. watch the players footwork, mechanics, handles, see how they use their basketball iq, defensive stance, etc...none of the fundamentals show up on a stat sheet. stats are why people think dwight is a great center....it's straight bullshit. watch the games and judge....now, stats can be useful no doubt about it. but those who use stats to paint an entire picture are idiots.

They're player efficiency stats. Stats that happen to record what a player does in the last five minutes of a game with the score being within five.

If you want to throw "4th quarter" stats out the window because they could juiced up if someone is down or up 15-20 and stuffing the sheet, but last five minutes within five points is pretty damn specific enough to see what one does.

"Eye test" is only for people in denial who'd rather cop out with their COMPLETELY, ENTIRELY subjective opinion.

I mean if you're really stuck that far in the past and can't comprehend statistics and truly think passing off your own opinions as fact is the way to go then "six rings" is a statistic. "Five rings" is a statistic. And the EYE test clearly shows me LeBron is more dominate than Kobe has been, therefore he must be ranked higher on the all-time list. Now you want to factor in statistics and what Kobe has accomplished and you have a whole new argument.

The eye test CLEARLY also shows me if I needed someone to shoot a "shot", Ray Allen is far the better candidate as he has the best jumpshot.

naah...the eye test shows that kobe has what it takes to get 5 rings, while lebron most likely doesnt

Says dude, who was taking his time finding a hypothetical "interesting stat in Kobe/Jordan debate" to prove his point in other "debate".

naah...the eye test shows that kobe has what it takes to get 5 rings, while lebron most likely doesnt

LeBron is 28 years old so let's wait before he finishes his career to talk smack about the number of rings. But even if he won 10 in a row, I'm sure you would still find something to downplay it.
