D-Rose out for year
« on: November 25, 2013, 04:05:11 PM »
Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose will miss the rest of the 2013-14 season after having surgery Monday to repair a torn medial meniscus in his right knee.

The timetable on Rose's absence indicates he had the meniscus repaired and reattached and not removed or partially removed. Reparation is the preferred surgical option, but rehabilitation and recovery takes longer. The meniscus acts as a cushion for knee bones, and without, the chance of early arthritis and other problems increase.

"You want to save what's there. My guess is that you want to prolong the longevity of the career," orthopedic surgeon Alexis Colvin told USA TODAY Sports. She is an associate professor of orthopedics and a surgeon at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York.

Rehab and recovery time for a repaired meniscus is 3-6 months, and it is well-documented that Rose took his time returning from a torn anterior cruciate ligament sustained in his left knee during the 2012 NBA playoffs.

The surgery was performed by team physicians Brian Cole, who was part of the team who repaired Rose's left ACL, and Chuck Bush Joseph at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.

Rose, who missed all of last season recovering from a torn ACL, sustained the injury in Friday's loss to the Portland Trail Blazers. It happened when he made a backdoor cut to the basket. The pass to Rose was stolen by Portland's Nicolas Batum and as Rose turned to go back on defense, his right knee buckled as he planted on his left foot.

"Like Bulls fans everywhere, I was heartbroken when I heard of Derrick's injury," Bulls owner Jerry Reinsdorf said Monday evening in a news release. "We are happy to know that, according to his doctors, his surgery was successful, and in time, Derrick is expected to make a full recovery. Everyone at the Bulls knows firsthand how extremely hard Derrick worked to return to the court this year, and I have no doubt he will do the same with regards to his recovery from this injury. Despite Derrick's absence, this is still a good team. I know from last year, this team and coaching staff will continue to make our fans proud."

It's another disappointing loss for the Bulls. Rose is one of league's most popular players — not among fans, but among players, too — as just as the NBA celebrated his return, it is lamenting his absence. Rose has been out of the lineup more often than he has been in it the past three seasons. When this season is over, Rose will have played in just 50 games in the past three seasons.

"We of course feel very badly for Derrick," Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau told news reporters Sunday before the Bulls' ugly 121-82 road loss against the Los Angeles Clippers. "I talked to him at length (Saturday) night. He's in good spirits — about as well as can be expected under the circumstances. And he's already thinking about his rehab and typical Derrick, concerned about his team (and) his teammates."

THIS IS A MINOR INJURY...ARTEST CAME BACK 2 WEEKS AFTER A MENISCUS TEAR (THO ARTEST OPTED FOR NO SURGERY)...IF HE HAD HIS MENISCUSES REMOVED ALTOGETHER ALA WADE, HE'D ONLY BE OUT 4 WEEKS...BUT THE SURGICAL PROCEDURE IS THE BEST IF UR TRYNA PROLONG YOUR CAREER. UNFORTUNATELY FOR THE BULLS, IT'S A 4 MONTH RECOVERY PERIOD, WHICH ACTUALLY MEANS ROSE MAY BE HEALED IN TIME TO PLAY IN THE PLAYOFFS (UNLESS HE PUSSIES OUT AGAIN)

THIS IS KARMA FOR NOT PLAYING IN LAST YEARS PLAYOFFS WHEN HE WAS MEDICALLY CLEARED, THO

Exactly.. it is irony and karma... Wonder if he will play this time when the playoffs roll around??

I remember during the Bulls playoff run last year, Rose was cleared to play and still sat out.  Guess he wanted to be 100% to come back and have a monster season this year.  Now this really looks bad with him getting injured for the season.  I would be pretty pissed if I was a Bulls fan.  I mean, some players just don't know how to play injured and how to avoid injury, either that or their bodies aren't built for it.  Somehow it seems he should of found a way to come in and contribute in the playoffs last year.

Had he played last year, I think the Bulls had a good chance of beating the Heat. Rose just needs to play when cleared. You are never guaranteed to get that far in the playoffs again. By not coming back, he is wasting his supporting cast's primes, as Noah, Deng and the rest will be older by the time he comes back. This supporting cast can get past the Heat with the right PG leading them, and that PG is Rose. He just needs to suck it up and play or he'll be leading a team that is very different and much older and slower.

no doubt.. if you are cleared to play you have to play.  I heard that in the NBA and NFL players are almost never playing at 100%.   I mean, if Rose is expecting to be 100% all the time he clearly is more concerned with his own body than winning championships.

That's his right and as a person I don't fault him for that.  Maybe I'd do the same and take care of my body and my future.

But if I was a Bulls fan, or maybe even a teammate I would be pissed.  Because like you said, you are never guaranteed to have another opportunity like the Bulls had last year, with Noah and Deng and the rest in their prime.

Had he played last year, I think the Bulls had a somewhat decent chance of beating the Heat.

After seeing how he opened the season after the summer off and work his way into game speed this preseason, you think 30% shooting would get the job done against a top three defense?

And that would be jumping in the middle of the playoffs after sitting out since the playoffs the year before.

I still think he should of laced them up. But they might have done worse lol.

The Bulls were competitive until they played the Heat. But you never know what that little extra star power could do. Rose could have added that bit extra to push the Bulls all the way. The Bulls without Rose were so damn good, it's crazy to think what Rose would have added.
