DJ Quik Is Getting Better With Time (re: The Book of David)

I listened the entire Book of David today and I gotta say, this is truly enduring music. This album features the perfection of the sounds Quik has been developing throughout his career. Everybody praises Safe + Sound and Rhythmalism, but the songs on this album are firmly in the tradition of those two albums. Think about it:

So Compton/Nobody/Flow For Sale/Boogie - these songs take the classic laidback sound of Somethin 4 The Mood and We Still Party to the next level. Higher quality instrumentation too.

Real Women/Time Stand Still - looks back to Whateva U Do and classic Quik songs about the ladies. But Real Women is much better.

Luv of My Life - man this song is just so fuckin clean and unique, Quik did his thing.

Ghetto Rendezvous/Fire & Brimstone - the angry Quik sound! He is at his cleverest when dissing people. The culmination of songs like Dollaz + Sense, Til Jesus Comes, etc.

Do Today - a real improved version of all those smooth Quik tracks for days with sunny weather.

Killer Dope - a classic cocky song where Quik is feeling himself

Quik's Groove 9 (from The End) - this is the best Quik's Groove since Quik's Groove III! Amazing track.

The only mediocre songs on Book of David were Babylon, Poppin, and Across the Map. And these are decent tracks. But all of the other tracks are just plain fire.

I find it strange that some people on here diss The Book of David and praise Quik's old albums. To me, if you love the old albums, you must love the Book of David.

Quik is one of the few west coast artists who is truly getting better with time. Life Jacket proves this.

I think Quik's 9th solo album could be his best yet.

Quik is usually pretty dope lyrically but his lyrics were garbage on this album. Didnt have the usual sharp whit, humour, or swag (I can't believe I actually used that word) he usually has.

I gotta be simply one of the greatest, one of the hardest, one of the smartest
one of the brightest, of the ones who helped start all this
some niggas eating simply because I chose to be an artist
way back when I was homeless, way back when I was carless...

QUIK IS DOPE ON THE BOOK OF DAVID!

That's just my ghetto mentality
I made it reality and it made me a salary
So I know just why you haters so mad at me
My life is a strategy while your life is a tragedy

THIS IS QUIK AT HIS WITTIEST!

And come on, the lyrics on Ghetto Rhendezvous and Fire & Brimstone...the rapping part of The End...Quik is as sharp as he has ever been!

Those 4 tracks are what Quik should do an entire album based on. He can do it. He shows us that he can still fire out these classics (like So Compton) with ease, yet he still (probably for business) decides to provide a mixture to appeal to all and everyone, but I wish he could do an album for us fans. A DJ Quik & Kurupt album is NOT on demand lol. A DJ Quik "lost tapes" album from his 95-99 era is though, and definitely a project with G-One, El Debarge, Suga Free, AMG & 2nd II none. The whole camp back.

Real Women/Time Stand Still - looks back to Whateva U Do and classic Quik songs about the ladies. But Real Women is much better.

I was with you until this. Real Women is a good song, hell it's fantastic for todays standards, but it doesn't hold a candle to that musically phenomenal masterpiece known as Whateva U Do

Actually, I agree with you 100%. Whateva U Do is the best Quik song about fucking bitches. Nothing compares to it: the instrumental sequence, the chorus, the lyrics, the DeBarge vocals, etc., it is the best song of this genre from Quik. What I meant is that I think Real Women is better than most of the other Quik songs about the ladies. Better than Itz Your Fantasy, better than Black Mercedez (close one!), better than a lot of tracks like that.

his sound has evolved a lot with the newer technologies, but i think it could be true. if quik produced solidly with the g-one/rob bacon team again it would make for some amazing music. and by that i mean material with that smooth vibe. wasn't he meant to be working with el debarge again recently, what happened to that? that's the kinda material i'd love to hear, or some type of rhythmalism 2.

also, certain tracks on blaqkout/book of david are amongst the best of his career, hands down. technically they may be best. the book of david is a masterclass in production. so yes, his skills are still improving. you dont get reach that level in the first place without the ability to grow and adapt constantly.

Book of David is awesome ..not the bullshit industry on othe radio airplay.

Across The Map is some different sound..southern sound...but still well produced.

Life Jacket..The World Be Like..Spaceships and Woodgrain Instrumental are better than 90 % of the all music released in 2013.

Quik was just pissed off when he made that record.

It's good but that impacted on the potential of the album IMO

The Safe & Sound to the Balance & Option period, which covers the 3 albums we all know and love are all filled with melodiously creative, yet enjoyably smooth songs that have so much classic replay value that 95% of those albums (minus the Balance & Options skits) can be enjoyed time and time again.

Although Book of David has 1 song that display that full-on flavour (So Compton) with a few others worthy of Quik endorsement that shows signs of value, but with progressive qualities (IE; Nobody, Flow, Real Women, Luv of My Life, Boogie) The rest of the album is wack IMO. We don't want to hear no damn "Greased Lightnin" HIIIIII-dromatic Bullshit, or tasteless trash. We buy Quik albums for one reason. We couldn't care about his gorilla-like daughter's troubles or family disputes. Just rap your weed, pussy and party over dope beats.
