MLB Report: Homer Bailey Extends With Cincinnati Reds (7 years, $130 mill WTF)

7th year is a mutual option for 25 mill, so assuming it ends in an opt-out, it would make this a 6 year, 105 million dollar extension.
Bailey is a good pitcher with a nice two-seamer, and in hindsight I suppose you could expect these starters to get their hefty payday with our current contract inflations... but these massive albatross contracts still manage to get a second look from me every time. Holy shit.

Agreed, especially with the guaranteed contracts in baseball and the fact that pitchers can break down at anytime. It's probably a sign of all the new TV money coming in to most teams.

Yo Rem, I know you're convinced Mariners need pitching more than they need position players but I just realized your OF might consist of Hart and Ackley. Nelson Cruz doesn't sound all that bad suddenly lol.

Well, as far as Ackley goes 2nd overall pick several years back, was trash to begin last year, got sent down, then came back up and ended up finishing around .250, they're obviously hoping for a breakout year or that he can at least be league average. I don't know what to expect from Hart honestly, but he's supposed to be healthy and is a 30+ home run guy when he has been, so having him play RF/DH is fine by me. There's also Logan Morrison who is probably going to get some time out there, but he's also coming off injury so he's another question mark. Then there's Saunders, great tools but hasn't really put it together, another guy that's gonna sink or swim this season. There's also a few intruiging guys in Abe Almonte and Stefan Romero that are going to be fighting for spots. My thing with Cruz is, low obp, strikes out all the time, he got to hit in that Texas launching pad (compare that to Safe-Co), and he's coming off the juice. He's obviously got a more solid track record than our other guys, but what can you expect from him moving forward, you're obviously not getting shit from him in the field either way. It could work, there's just a lot of red flags for me in putting down money on a guy like that.

Hart can hit for sure but this dude has no knees, and was a horrible fielder even before his injuries. Putting him at anything other than DH sounds disastrous.
I admit I forgot to factor in parks when I mentioned Nelson Cruz though. Safeco is going to be a very rude awakening for a guy who spent his career in Arlington, where even Ian Kinsler hit 30 home runs, twice.
Maybe they can make a trade for an outfielder. Damn I wish Mariners signed their hometown boy Jacoby. Watching him in a Yankee uniform just isn't going to look right.
