This is part 2 of My Exclusive Interview With Death Row Runner, 2nd Engineer, (eventually full-on engineer) Mr. Phil Brewster.
This is a pretty detailed interview. In full it runs about 70 mins. Phil was kind enough to record his end for our listening pleasure. Big thanks to Phil for that! Phil was kind enough to answer pretty much any question he could and I found this to be an entertaining and candid interview. Phil spent about a year at Death Row from Early April 1995 to March 1996. He is responsible for the 'Let's Get Ready To Rumble' Sample in the song, Ambitionz Az A Ridah. You also hear his engineering on such songs as How Do U Want It, I Aint Mad At Cha, 2 of Americas Most Wanted, & California Love.

This was one of the best interviews, a few highlights..

-Phil dissing Kanye and Drake

-Phil saying the East Coast West Coast shit WAS REAL.  I hate when rappers try to blame it on the media, I love Snoop but even Snoop and others try to do that.  That shit was real back in the day.  Nice anecdote about Syke.

-Phil talking about being a musician now, and about how Can Am and Death Row used to have a budget for an album and the day of those big budget album projects are gone.  All interesting stuff.

Hands down this was one of the best from Jmix, real insights here from a guy that seems to put it across like a fly on the wall. It seems Phil just went to work, kept his mouth shut and eyes open to give us a real insight into what went on unlike other peeps who've been interviewed and make DR seem like Disneyland for fear of coming across shook.

Also, real valid points about how technology has killed the game and saturated the market now due to their being no real skills or creativity based on limitation. Don't worry, cock it up as many times as you want and the software will sort it out.

Good interview.

I like this guy... he just seems honest and doesn't seem to be exaggerating anything, especially since the studio engineers don't really have an image to uphold.  Every rapper or producer, whether they're being honest or not, seems to want to up their rep by talking about how they with Death Row at some point in their lives but claim that they weren't one of the people to have been slapped around.  Plus he wasn't concerned with admitting when he was scared of Suge or growing weary of what was going on at Death Row, contrasting to rappers and producers claiming that Suge didn't scare them.  One example, while not a jmix interviewee, was Warren G.  He got jumped at Death Row and got his necklace snatched and Snoop had to get it back for him, plus there are stories of him talking shit about Suge (stemming from how he got persuaded into giving Regulate to Suge essentially for free) when he was high during an interview with some magazine (likely VIBE or Source), but they had already gone to press when he came to his senses and asked them to remove it, then he was scared that Suge would do something but was walking around the streets strapped specifically because of that.  But then in some interview he did within the past few years, he was talking about how he was not one of the guys to get slapped around.

Another thing I liked was that he flat-out admitted that he never really hung out with Pac and just worked with him a number of times and was already working somewhere else three months prior to Pac's death.  Again, it contrasts to everyone claiming that they were best friends since the beginning of time and that they were supposed to have been riding in the backseat of the BMW with Suge and Pac if it weren't for them having a runny nose while taking a shit on a toilet in North Dakota that night.

Yo homie... that would be huge if you got Warren G.  I mean, just having him explain how that worked out with him being a step-brother to Dre, and best friends with Snoop and Nate, recording with them all the time... but yet not being on Death Row and being over with Def Jam.  Like how the fuck did that all work out?   Not to mention, Warren G was homies with Pac, in the sense that he was one of the first cats from that camp to record with Pac.

Then there are even more confusing questions like why the fuck Snoop never had Warren produce much of his music, even though they are best friends and his beats are perfect for Snoop's laid back style.

And not to mention, his icy relationship with Suge.   Lot of great stuff if you get Warren.

...OHHH And just as a last note, it would be cool to let him know how fuccin dope the Twinz album was and how big of fans everyone still is of that album, and even the Dove Shack album was fuccin dope but what the fucc was up with the skits on that album?
