« on: June 23, 2014, 05:25:41 PM »
I'm not counting old school dudes like Kurupt and Myka 9 without youtube footage of battles

i think Dizaster or Thesaurus is best

not that your opinion means anything, but way to contribute to the thread by mentioning someone you think should be on there  ::)

What the fuck is wrong with you?  DAYLYT.

Hardest battle rap line of 2014 so far.  You can see Method Man giving up props for that.  When your opponent and everyone on his side reacts like that... yeah.

Thesaurus is still good but he's nowhere near the peak he reached a number of years ago, and he's not a heavy hitter within the battle rap world these days.  His battle rap career has spanned really long and he can still do it, but he's not interesting anymore.

Illmac is annoying as hell, and he acts too confident when he's this little guy who looks like an elf.  He has some cool rhymes here and there, but I hate his flow and his voice.  Also well past his prime, and even when he was in his prime, he wasn't offing people either.

Diz is cool but very inconsistent and overhyped.  He's vicious when he prepares, but he goes to battles and relies too much on freestyled material, which is always a huge risk, and more often than not, he just says a bunch of corny stuff.  But when he's in that freestyle mode on the right day, yeah, he can come up with some good material.  But he hasn't had a good run recently.

Okwerdz is garbage.  He used to put up good fights (like when he battled Arsonal and Hollow), but he got all corny, and then he got his ass thoroughly whooped by Rone.  Career ending bodybag.  And this guy wanted to battle on URL?

DBD is so fucking corny.  His style was kind of funny on Grind Time, but now the jokes are just played out.  Like when he battled Rone and was doing that "b-b-b-bird-bird-bird" shit, or when Charlie Clips slapped him around for three rounds bad.

DFD was dope (and my favorite when Grind Time was popping), but it was disappointing that he pretty much quit after Kid Twist beat him.  But his style wouldn't be all that strong these days, as even KOTD guys are bringing real bars and not just the funny shit anymore.  I met him back in 2010 or 2011 at a Grind Time event, and even then, he said he was done with battle rap.

NoCanDo was also a dope freestyler, but I was never really a huge fan.  Doesn't mean I didn't like him though... I just didn't ever feel like watching his battles.

So in LA tonight, dizaster just scrapped with math hoffa from brooklyn...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UQ0DJ-3Hk2E&feature=youtu.be

Fighting in battles is bullshit, but damn. Diz gave it to em. Nothing that Math couldn't brush off, but that tough guy image of his took a little bit of a hit.

kurupt and xzibit > that whole list

thanks for sparring me the time to demonstrate how retarded you are

Kurupt and Xzibit have never entitled a battle competition since 2pac was alive.  These are not "battle rappers" and you certainly have not seen EITHER of them battle.  get your dumb ass outta this thread before T.I. makes you change his diaper.

Also, the diss records that they did do weren't really anything crazy either... obviously leaving out the songs that had a few one-liners at whoever (i.e. What Would U Do, Dogg Pound Gangstaz).  Callin Out Names wasn't really all that great of a diss record, despite going at a lot of people (DMX, Foxy, Ja Rule, 50, etc.).  Kurupt can be vicious lyrically when he wants to, but for some reason it doesn't seem to translate to his battle/beef shit.  And who did Xzibig diss?  He just had some two minute song dissing Jermaine Dupri.  I remember it being a decent track, but JD isn't really a noteworthy target.

Crooked I, on the other hand... that guy will chew motherfuckers heads off in a battle.  And there's talk of industry guys doing it (as Joe Budden is supposed to battle Hollow Da Don in a month or so, plus Canibus gave it a go but got killed by Dizaster... and don't forget Canibus did battle records too), so it's possible.  Ironically DNA (a younger battle rapper from Queens... he can freestyle pretty well too) made a song that took a few shots at Crooked that he put out earlier today.

Good thread. I'm gonna check some vids of these guys out as I don't follow the circuit. Personally I don't like these white dudes that spit angery writtens like bad tempered standup comedians

If we're talking old schoolers doe, I think Roscoe inherited the crown as one of the best genuine off the dome freestyles/natural prolific spitters

Yeah.  I've always been into battle rap and have gone to a few of the ones that went down in LA.  I agree though... some of the white guys can spit but I hate it when they try to talk the street shit when it's clear they're not with it.  For example, Real Deal is cool but he is a school teacher but raps like he's hood.  Not necessarily gangsta but with the grammar and pronunciation.

Check the stuff out... it might be hard to catch everything if you're new to it (not just in terms of the styles they have now, but they make references to a lot of other battlers or other battles or incidents that happened to those battlers), but it gets the attention of a lot of celebs.  Drake has been to two KOTD events (only in Toronto though since Drake is a fruitcake).  At URL's Summer Madness 2, Puff, Busta Rhymes, Q-Tip and Lloyd Banks were there, then Lil Cease was at another one later, and at URL's Night of Main Events 4, I remember seeing Adrian Broner and Kevin Durant onstage.  And Method Man was at the KOTD event in LA in April.

Anyway, some dope battles that I remember seeing:

Daylyt vs. Chilla Jones (the one I posted earlier) -- One of his better ones.  Daylyt is from Watts (Grape St. Crip).  Sometimes he does weird shit but it's usually battles on other small leagues, like he dressed up once as a KKK member, another time he stripped naked (with a napkin around his dick).  But both guys were dope in this one.  Daylyt had a nice Mortal Kombat scheme in the first round (hence the Mr. Mackey "Mmmkay" that was really MK like Mortal Kombat).

Dizaster vs. Canibus -- One-sided beatdown.  Dizaster is generally inconsistent but he prepared for this one.  Normally he freestyles too much and spits stuff that doesn't hit, but here it was a nice mix.

Dizaster vs. DNA -- This one was long awaited since it got cancelled, and they had some tension between each other but were cool afterward.  Drake was at this one, and both of them had some freestyled bars about him.

Soul Khan vs. Fresco -- Soul Khan is a nerdy Jewish guy, Fresco is gay.  But this one was fucking funny as hell.  I remember laughing so hard at it that my neighbor came over to see what was so funny.

Daylyt vs. Rich Dolarz -- One of Day's best performances too.

And if you're curious about good battles from dudes outside of Cali...

Calicoe vs. Loaded Lux -- One of the highest viewed battles.

Calicoe vs. O-Red -- Calicoe's third round was pretty much all freestyled and really funny since it was true about the other guy.

Charlie Clips vs. Serius Jones -- Serius Jones was the first guy to beat Jin.  He showed a lot of freestyle game in the third round.  He had this scheme about dead rappers that was pretty funny despite being simple.

T-Rex vs. Aye Verb -- Puff was there and put up $10,000 for the winner (on top of whatever they were getting paid already).

If we're talking old schoolers doe, I think Roscoe inherited the crown as one of the best genuine off the dome freestyles/natural prolific spitters
You know, Roscoe can spit, but his freestyles are only dope at the moment.  The people around him get hyped up, but when you watch it a second time, it's not really that amazing.  I liked that one sort-of battle he had that was on G-TV where he ended it with "Your rhymes is like liquid/ I swallow it and piss it," it was cool, but in hindsight not the craziest line.  Same thing with that long freestyle where he was dissing Snoop and Daz.  A lot of it was just gibberish.
