he's been popular in the mainstream for at least 6 years. i remember my roommate in NOLA in 09 who was not that much into rap, let alone westcoast rap, talking about him.

he's the type of rapper who has a buzz and a name, who gravitates around and gets props from a lot of big acts, that's what relevant is being about. if you ask any casual rap listener 10 rappers from the west who have emerged not too long ago (last 10 years), Nipsey's name will keep coming up.

now I think I understand what Will meant. He meant that his solo discography and career overall is somewhat underwhelming and that's how I feel too, but in this day and age you don't need to have a career and high profile retail albums to be relevant (whether it's a good or bad thing is another subject)

nah he's getting props in the industry, meaning he's not a fad ala Glasses Malone (whom I like but who didn't stay relevant very long) and stay dropping material and features with high profile names (newer and older), that's the definition of relevant. whether he's a recycled g-shit specialist is besides the point, when you get like 550k followers on twitter (without having to pay for them ala JT The Bigga Figga or Kokane), that means you're relevant, good or bad.
