With the success of its biopic, which finished No. 1 for the second straight weekend, N.W.A.'s "Straight Outta Compton" reached the top 40 of Billboard's Hot 100 charts at No. 38, making it the first time the legendary group has landed in the ranking.

The song was released in 1988, and never cracked the overall year-end Top 100 charts. The recent success of the biopic Straight Outta Compton, though, has breathed new life into N.W.A.'s album sales. They've jumped over 200 percent since the biopic was released. It's only natural with how popular the movie has been that the song it was named after reached the Billboard charts. It doesn't mean much for the members of N.W.A., but it's nice to see the movie is having an impact on another generation of music listeners.

Witness the strength of street knowledge again and again and again.

This news reminds me of the stuff I was talking about back in the day, particularly with the regards to Wideawake.  I remember everyone talking about how putting out unreleased music from Death Row was the way to make a profit and I was trying to explain how the established catalog is where the money is.  When old artists become relevant again, new fans buy their classic stuff.

I mentioned earlier, they could have done a soundtrack to this movie and these young kids would eat it up. I'm shocked at how much my younger students, (oldest I've worked with are now in their mid-20's, youngest are 19) are eating this movie up. Some of the girls are on some feminist shit and they are boycotting it, but most of them are watching this movie and making NWA playlist on Spotify... LOL... even asking me for songs to put on their list.

yeah sure.. for many it is a trend, but it's nice when the trend shifts towards something you are down with.  I mean, it's nice actually hearing about dope shit every now and then in the media.  It won't last, but I'm gonna ride this wave just like I road the Death Row wave in the mid-90's and the Eminem/Aftermath/West Coast resurgence wave from 99-2003

Tell me about it. At my college, I had a long conversation with a guy who just wanted to know what it was like in California in this time and what it was like to hear 'Pac on the radio and the whole crack environment. This is actually really cool for an old man like me. lol.
