What if the Chronic...
« on: May 05, 2003, 10:42:33 PM »
Had dropped on Ruthless? Dre, Eazy, Snoop, DOC, Ren, Yella, ATL, Daz, Kurupt, RBX, Rage, etc...

I always wondered how this would have panned out, and whether it would have been better or worse. Leaving Ruthless and starting Death Row gave Dre a reason to prove himself...At the same time, imagine all the collabos we could have heard from that era!

Thoughts?

hm.....i really have no idea because I wasn't up on game about them at that time....I know that for one, for some reason, everything from the Chronic to All Eyez on Me had a polish to them that almost no records from one company have ever had, and I donno if it was because of Tha Row or because of who suge had. I mean since they broke, Dre has remained big snoop has gotten worse and everybody else barely gets noticed by the rest of the country. I kinda think it was a magic at Death Row that Dre wouldn't have had at Ruthless...I never heard Eazy and them rap to G-Funk so it coulda been better but damn....thas a hard one 2 answer

Half of what made the Chronic great was the dissing of Eazy E. I remember that shit. Dre introducing Snoop, who had a flow never heard in Hip-Hop before, and the battle raps to the whole game. It was Death Row's coming out party, we are now taking over, and fuck everyone else. The shit is hella tight, the  rappers are new, fresh, hungry and got mad skillz, and we are the most gangsta lable ever, so you can't do shit. As for on Ruthless, Eazy was getting mad hate at the time for the whole lunch with G. Bush 1, and supporting a cop that was in the beating of Rodney King, and having a white partner, so it would have not been the same in the streets. Who knows about suburbia, but on the streets, it was Death Row, and the raw shit they brought. Maybe better music, but not the impact.

Dunno, it'll probably wouldn't be the same.

But think about this; What if the Chronic didn't have Snoop on it? I mean, no dickryding, but Snoop made that album what it is today. Dre is a good rapper, but nothing special. Just my opinion though.

The Chronic definitely would have lost a lot of its shine if Snoop hadn't been on it. I think it was the combination of how incredibly well Snoop's flow complemented Dre's G-Funk that pushed the album to classic status. The beats were on some next level shit, but everyone was also talking about that new guy with the laid back flow that was all over the album. One of the many reasons why Doggystyle was so eagerly anticipated back then.

That's interesting....It'd be tight to have had E, Ren, Knocc Out, Dresta and Kokane involved, but it probably wouldn't have had the same impact that it did on Death Row.  Still woulda been tight though.

Check these homie..
G-Funk at it'z best.

"efil4zaggiN"

"Black Mafia Life"

Those are the bluepritns to "The Chronic"
all done Ruthless style.

ImO...I personaly prefer "efil4zaggiN" over "The Chronic"
Dre was on to something when he did that record.
I wish we could have heard more N.W.A. shitt...Could only imagine Eazy rippin' the "let me ride" beat...

Didn't Yella or somebody else close to Eazy say in an interview that, even till the day he died, Eazy thought the Chronic album sounded like sh*t? I remember reading something like that in an interview, but can't seem to find it anywhere. Anybody else remember that?

Yes, I defo prefer Niggaz4life over The Chronic.  I'd give Niggaz4Life 5/5 and Chronic 4.5/5.  And an Eazy verse on Let me ride....damn, that'd be sweet.
