Why Dre's taking so long...
« on: May 11, 2003, 07:18:58 PM »
We were talking on another thread about how long it's taking for detox to get done, and 7even remarked how they did 50's album so quick, why can't dre do that now.

I think there's a few things going on, of course they're trying to make rakim, cube's, and dre's albums all classic masterpieces, and I think there's 4 ingredients to that, that most classic albums have behind them.

1. Timing - For instance, the chronic came out at the perfect time.  I dunno how you can judge when a good time to put an album out is, though... it's probably a good time for Rakim and Cube anytime, since it's been so long since they had something that was mind blowin'.

2. Time spent making the album - this is like a quality control, up to a point, the longer they take to make the album, the higher quality it's gonna be... like snoop taking a week to make the game, and months to make no limit topp dogg.  The extra time sure increased the quality... there's a limit though, I mean master p could take 10 years to make an album and it still wouldn't be all that... and Dre is taking forever, when he doesn't need quite as long as he's taking.

3. Inspiration/vision - you need some sort of vision to make the album with... like when the chronic dropped, he had things to talk about, he had ideas for songs, he had music in his head, etc.  Same with Cube, when he made his first solo, he had so much to say, it didn't take long to record at all, he had that inspiration.  If Dre doesn't get inspired, all 3 of these albums won't be very good.

and 4. the final one - Luck - I think sometimes whether or not an album is a masterpiece is just out of your hands, it's just a luck situation.  That's why we see so many dope artists (canibus, for instance) that just don't have much success, for some reason they've done everything they can do, and it just ain't workin' for em (quik, etc.).

I think what's going on with Dre right now, and why he's taking so long is, he's not inspired, and he's trying to compensate for that by taking longer to do the album.  The timing I guess he can't really control, and the luck aspect he can't control, but since he isn't feeling incredibly inspired, he doesn't have some big mind-blowing sound in mind, I think he's making up for it by spending too much time on the album.  Hopefully, he'll have an epiphany (word?) soon, and get something dope out... or maybe he already has, I dunno.  So I kinda think he's stalling because he hasn't found a direction yet that's just amazing to him.

the main reason why Dre is taking so long is because he wants to make a classic record or even a History record Dr.Dre is the Millenium Quincy Jones so he's working hard to bring something hot and fresh dont forget that it will be his last record so Im down for waiting another year

^^ Yup, that's what I'm saying, he's not confident, because he doesn't have any kind of vision or inspiration that he knows is gonna be dope.  Great point about Quincy Jones too, and Dre would tell you Quincy's his daddy. .
