What's the big deal? Bush was basically a Pharrell album as far as who had artistic control. Missionary is a Dre album as far as who has artistic control.

Weren't Snoop and Dre at odds over how many songs to include? Looks as if Dre won out. IIRC, Dre wanted 15 traccs.

Nope, Dre wanted 13 tracks and Snoop wanted 16 tracks.

Guess they settled for 15.

If he did it would be his in-house Death-Row homies and from elite MCs of the time like Kurupt, RBX, Rage etc...on the same page as himself but we also know Snoop wrote classics by himself too, that's undisputed.

Deathrow camp do this among themselves here & there back then, remember Kurupt mentioned Snoop wrote his verse on poetic justice soundtrack song or something like that.

Snoop did a lot of writing with Chronic & Doggystyle, D.O.C said he was coaching him on how to structure his lyrics during Chronic because, he was just rapping with no structure

One of the best Snoop Dogg song in my opinion is on Dupri's Soundtrack (Life in 1472), "Protectors of 1472" produced by Preemo.

That track is a classic for sure.  The track they did on the MIB soundtrack is also very dope.

I read an interview the other day where Dre said he wanted 14 and Snoop 16.   Same one where Dre said he has a few songs with verses on them but only one would probably make it.

any word on D.O.C's involvement in this?

Someone asked DOC on twitter yesterday if he was involved on this album. He said he was only there for moral support and that Dre & Snoop were basically on cruise control making this album.

Yes, I know!!! There's are other cartoonists who could do the art.

I did 2 artwork concepts for the album a few months ago… on my instagram page & paying homage to the OG Joe Cool cover.

ETA with Snoop, Dre, Busta and Paak was so dope…can’t believe I forgot all about it somehow.  It blew the rest of the Contract EP out the water.   Wish it would’ve been saved for missionary

Gorgeous sounds great, i like the beat and the hook, but i think that Snoop’s verses feel a bit unnatural.
With Dre's habit of making Snoop repeat lines to perfect every word, it feels like the verses were recorded in separate parts and pieced together, which disrupts the flow and makes it sound disjointed. I know that recording verses in separate parts always been a thing, but here it feels too noticeable
Overall, I like the track but i hope that the rest of the album is better.

Great concept of art. Preferred the second one. Congrats to you, and R.I.P. Joe Cool.

i hear it too

thought that was my producer ear noticing it, but verses are definitely contrived and punched in

he does sound more energetic tho

He sounded like a lost puppy on that one.

I felt like that when i heard the album for the first time. Whispering flow, no convidence. Like he was on drugs. A few years later i saw the godfather movie. Vito Corleone is whispering as well. Started listening to the album again and realised freestyle conversation was one of the sickest flow/beat combos ever. After that the dj pooh tracks doggyland, 2001 became the future funk blueprint to me. Very creative one of a kind album.

I agree. The verses are overly spliced together. Dre might have micromanaged it too much. Have Snoop do the full verse in an unbroken take, and if he messes up, have him do it again and again until he gets it right. But I'm guessing they opted instead to record the song line by line and splice them together individually ala Boyz N Tha Hood. I don't think this was a wise decision, but maybe Snoop was just incapable of delivering each verse the way Dre wanted without messing up. He is older now, after all, and it's natural for his ability to not be what it once was.

The Doggfather is perhaps the worst engineered big budget hip hop album that I can think of. The engineering is truly atrocious.

"Detox" is a myth -- Bigfoot, Loch Ness Monster, Area 51, Iraq having WMD, Detox...you get it now?  It was invented by the Aftermath marketing department to maintain the fans' attention.  Notice how everytime a new Aftermath album is ready to come out, they always mention Detox is next up?  Because they are using the invention of "Detox" as a way to market other albums.  The sooner you realize that Detox is NOT REAL, the sooner you'll feel liberated.  Oh yeah, f.u. Aftermath for fooling us fans.
