Sounds like they recorded some actual bangers for "Missionary" but in true Dre style....bangers go straight to the vault.

Many comments and reviews agree that this album just doesn't connect with them. It's not the sound they're feeling and expected with their track record. The song selection is targeted towards the Snoop TV icon crowd instead of the Snoop/Dre Hip Hop icons crowd.

Seems like fans and music critics agree this album isn't bad, but far from what was being expected a Dre record. Not sure what this means for Dre and Snoop. Will this motivate Dre to shut up the critics, maybe with that leftovers EP or a proper follow up record?

The headline is "Hip-hop legends surprise UK disability charity with unexpected collaboration."

Here's another link to the story behind the sample: https://rollingout.com/2024/12/30/snoop-dogg-dr-dre-charity-sample/

"Proceeds from the single will benefit the charity and the disabled artists who featured on the track, providing crucial support for their ongoing creative endeavors."

Pretty selfless thing to do if you ask me. Well done.

Yeah that’s fire - those people so appreciative, it’s a great story.

Single is polarizing but at the end of the day I came around to it. The way they’re rhyming with one another how could I not

Now that I've given the album some time to marinate I have to say I'm really happy with it.  I tried hard not to over-analyze anything.  But here's some thoughts I've had:

- Back in the mid 2000s everyone wanted 'grown up' beats with live instrumentation (Like Busta Rhymes "Been Through The Storm").  Now Dre is using a lot of live instruments on this but for some reason it's not hitting like I thought it would.  I think the music is so polished and clean sounding that it's lacking the 'grit'.  I'd like to hear it on vinyl to see if that makes a difference.

- I don't like the kids on "Hard Knocks"

- I'm not really feelin "Skyscrapers".  That sample just makes me hear Jay Z "1-900-Hustler".  I think Bink did it better.

- "Now or Never" beat is amazing to me.  Love this song.  I'm a big BJ The Chicago Kid fan.  Glad to see him involved.

- I wish there were some skits.  Dre and Snoop always had great skits.

- I think I like this album a lot more than most people on here.  It's cool to see who likes what, and how everyone's musical taste is different.  Overall I'm really happy to have this album.  I wasn't expecting a sequel to Doggystyle, I was just expecting a great album and I got one.

Check this top 30 albums of the year list to see where Missionary ranked.  Also find the Eastsidaz and Tha Doggpound albums inside the top 30.

Also, listening to Missionary for the first time on vinyl.  I’m noticing the mids and lows are a lot warmer and overall the album just sounds much better.

I enjoyed his brief breakdown of each album.

And “Polarising” is an apt word for Missionary.

sometimes i imagine snoop performing "hard knocks" on tiny desk with a band and kids choir.

production was the point with the album, it gives you a live performance feeling except of songs like "thank you" and "now or never".

i think thats what dre is talking about what the next hip hop era should be.

We got a taste of this before the Snoop & Marsha albums with the Kanye Remix album (Jesus is King II):

Snoop Dogg’s ‘Missionary’ Makes Top 10 Debut Across Multiple Billboard Album Charts

The set arrives in the top 10 on Top Album Sales, Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums & Top Rap Albums.

Snoop Dogg’s Missionary album debuts in the top 10 across multiple Billboard charts, as the set opens in the top 10 on Top Album Sales (No. 7), Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums (No. 7) and Top Rap Albums (No. 3) — all charts dated Dec. 28. It also launches at No. 20 on the overall Billboard 200 chart. On Top Album Sales, Missionary marks Snoop’s highest-charting effort in over 15 years.

Missionary is the first album from Snoop Dogg produced by Dr. Dre since their successful teaming on Snoop’s debut effort Doggystyle in 1993.

Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart ranks the top-selling albums of the week based only on traditional album sales. The chart’s history dates back to May 25, 1991, the first week Billboard began tabulating charts with electronically monitored piece count information from SoundScan, now Luminate. Pure album sales were the sole measurement utilized by the Billboard 200 albums chart through the list dated Dec. 6, 2014, after which that chart switched to a methodology that blends album sales with track equivalent album (TEA) units and streaming equivalent album (SEA) units.

Missionary debuts with 38,000 equivalent album units earned in the U.S. in the week ending Dec. 19, according to Luminate. Of that sum, album sales comprise 20,500, SEA units comprise 16,500 and TEA units comprise the remaining sum.

On Top Album Sales, Missionary is Snoop’s 13th top 10-charting effort and highest charting effort set Ego Trippin debuted and peaked at No. 3 on the March, 29, 2008-dated list.

Is there any full version of this? Sounds like a warren or daz production.

👍🏽 Another matured, sensible review, positive or negative review doesn’t matter, as long as it’s done in a sensible way.

Compared to some of the distasteful antics on here🙈

Like saying Dre’s aneurysm episode might have affected his production just because you don’t like a song!

That’s how low & classless some cunts are on here

huh?

an aneurism can definitely affect your cognitive abilities. what are you going on about? it’s not a diss homie. it’s like rupturing your achilles in sports.. sure, u can still play- but your prime days are behind you.

the only “classless” thing here is you calling people “cunts” because they have an opinion on the music that u disagree with.

there’s a few of you on here..

My conclusion after a few weeks of listening:

Overall, I like the album. It's still frustrating that we've more or less gotten the third ICU album now, while in the Parker, Batson etc. era we only got Relapse.
An album produced entirely by Dre between 2002 and 2006 would have been a dream, unfortunately his output in the last 10 years is higher than in the 10 years before. But it can't be changed now, at least we've got new music.

Nevertheless, I like Missionary. The problem remains that the beats are often too complicated, there are too many beat switches and Dre seems to have lost the ability to produce really catchy bangers. However, the album is produced to a very high standard, the beats are very clean and you can tell that a lot of work and money has been invested in the production. I actually like all the features and the more poppy tracks also suit the album well. I think it's rare these days to hear such a well-produced album. On the other hand, Kendrick showed with GNX, for example, that you no longer necessarily have to be Dr. Dre to produce a very clean and high-quality album.

Overall, I'm very satisfied with the album. There are a few bangers missing, the classic Dre pianos are missing on many tracks and the stomping drums are mostly missing - surprisingly, “Last Dance With Mary Jane” still has the most typical Dre drums in my opinion.

You have to live with the fact that Dre has a new sound. You also have to live with the fact that you can't produce a comparable Doggystyle successor 30 years later. And you probably also have to live with the fact that a Dre/Snoop album would have been much more interesting 20 years ago, especially productionwise. But overall, I like “Missionary” and have actually been listening to it every day since its release. The bottom line is that it could have been much, much worse. Not an extremely good album, but a good one.
