The balls on K-Dot for doing what he did.  That show is not going to be everybody's thing, but you have to respect his willingness to do whatever he wants to do.  IMO that is true artistry.  As the first true solo rap act to perform, he did exactly what he wanted to do and didn't go for appeasing everyone,  The choice to highlight his new album, which happens to be the only album released on his new label, where he owns the masters was a smart choice.  Streaming numbers for all those songs have increased by 200% in a day and you can't look at anything today without someone having a take about the show.

If you love Drake, white, and over a certain age, you might not have cared for it.  If you love music, hip hop, or are under 40, you probably enjoyed it. Rap at it's best has always been about irreverence and rebellion. Last night was irreverence and rebellion at it's finest.

Last night is the reason Kendrick is a GOAT and it is fun to watch him continue to outmaneuver his generation of rappers.

dre n snoop still performed nothing but hits .. and none of their recent stuff, because they know it doesn’t resonate wit the crowd

the stuff kendrick performed outside of be humble and not like us werent hits. nobody in the crowd had any idea what those songs were

All The Stars was a huge hit for him.  People in the crowd knew that song.  SZA got a huge entrance for it too.  DNA was a decent hit for him too.  I think he did exactly what he should have done.  Half hits and half sprinkled in some new stuff to get people interested in some new songs.

crowd didnt know the other songs tho

from a hip-hop perspective, it was cool

from a universal nfl fan perspective, it wasn’t as spectacular and well received as your traditional halftime show

I’ve seen a lot of Democrats and Republicans over-react on both sides of this.  Republicans like Jason Whitlock saying it was some sort of Satanic hate America performance, democrats saying he’s some genius and it was the most revolutionary performance of all time… both sides over reacting

It was art, it was satire and subtlety.   Not a big Kendrick fan but I still think it was a pretty impressive performance.  I don’t like racial narratives anymore those same themes have been used again and again going back to PE and NWA in the 80’s — that shit is so tired and as a Trump guy I think they aren’t even applicable.  So if I was still a self-hating anti-American white like I was 18-25 years old I would have loved the performance even more.

I pretty much agree but for Kendrick I think it wasn’t possible for him to give a legacy peformance because he doesn’t have those crossover hits like Prince and MJ or “Next Episode” and shit like that

So I think Kendrick did the best with what he had

i was expecting a better show honestly. also i didn't feel set list is good.

kendrick has way more better concerts than this. even his 3 min perfermonce on dr. dre's half time s how was better than this.

but i liked it anyway. it was good.

what do ya'll think he should of performed?

I still remember back in the day the first time I ever saw Kendrick he performed "Weed, Women, Weather" that banger with Dre at Coachella.  His performance wasn't that impressive but the song was good.  That was the same legendary moment they brought out the Pac hologram.

From a universal NFL crowd perspective, you're always going to have about half the people not like it.  I'm taking myself for example, next year's halftime show could have the greatest country singer of all time and perform all of his biggest hits and i would still think it sucked because i'm not a country fan.  There are people here at my job who didn't even know who Kendrick Lamar was, let alone would know any of his songs.  When you have 8-80 year olds watching the game, no way you're going to resonate with everyone no matter how big of a star you are.  Many of the common people are not hip hop fans, just is what it is.  If Kendrick would've done Money Trees and a few other hits from GKMC like you suggested, wouldn't have made any difference in the eyes of many NFL fans.

brother u don’t have to always dig and find ways to overcomplicate things …. this reminds me of the time u said that we don’t know if songs on missionary are timeless hits …

let’s keep it simple here ….. bottom line = he has songs far more popular than the ones he did. doing popular songs that at least the core hip-hop audience know would resonate on a higher level

but he’s actually getting critical acclaim for the performance and people raving about how deep the message was, so what do i know …. i’m just saying from an entertainment point of view, the super bowl has always been a place where the biggest stars perform their biggest hits …… nothin more nothin less
