'MISTAKE WAS MADE' NFL reveals ‘regret’ over Super Bowl halftime show after issuing apology following Kendrick Lamar performance

THE NFL is feeling regret for picking Kendrick Lamar over Lil Wayne for the 2025 Super Bowl halftime show, sources have exclusively told The U.S. Sun.

Insiders have said that league officials feel they made a mistake after earlier issuing an apology to Lil Wayne, 42, for snubbing him for the monumental performance in his hometown of New Orleans.

The NFL sent an apology letter to the iconic rapper after picking Kendrick for the gig back in September, Skip Bayless shockingly revealed earlier this week.

Now, a staffer said officials wish they went with Lil Wayne for the job after fans were underwhelmed with Kendrick's show.

"A mistake was made and we regret the choice that was made," an NFL employee told The U.S. Sun.

"Lil Wayne should have been the first option, as he is from New Orleans and we know that there was a clear motivation for him and his side to do a unique show in his town."

The NFL insider said from now on the organization "would like to have artists that have some more connection to the place, the city, the state where the game will be played."

"Lil Wayne was the obvious choice, and the choice made wasn't the best one at all," the source continued.

They lamented the decision would have taken "a couple of minutes" to finalize and Lil Wayne "would have been thrilled to do the halftime show in his hometown.

"We regret not pushing for him as much as we should have," they concluded.

'CITY OF LIL WAYNE'
A second NFL insider echoed the regrettable decision.

"I mean, New Orleans is the city of Lil Wayne," the league insider said.

"He did a lot and it would have been fantastic to have him do the halftime show and show his love, and feel the love, from his hometown.

"The choice was clearly the wrong one, and now the goal is to not make the same mistake from now on."

'I BLAME MYSELF'
Lil Wayne previously opened up about his disappointment in not being selected for the gig.

"I blame myself for not being mentally prepared for a letdown and for just automatically mentally putting myself in that position," he said on Instagram Live in September.

"I thought there was nothing better than that spot, that stage, that platform, in my city.

"So it hurt, it hurt a whole lot."

Bayless, a friend of Lil Wayne, previously said the NFL's decision to skip the rapper shocked him at first.

"When the news first broke, it hit Wayne hard," Bayless said.

"He didn't feel like doing much of anything for several long days and nights. He's better now."

'NOT ONE SECOND'
Lil Wayne is a weekly guest on NFL's Sunday pregame show, NFL GameDay Morning, on the NFL Network.

However, Bayless said Lil Wayne planned to skip the halftime show during the game.

"He will watch the game, just not the halftime show. Not one second," he said.

Kendrick has not spoken out on the backlash since Sunday - and is already in the middle of another feud with rival rapper Drake which took center stage during his show.

He performed his controversial tune Not Like Us to round off the spectacle, in which he takes a dig at Drake and shockingly insinuates he's a pedophile.

Drake has already sued Unniversal Music over the track and many NFL fans questioned whether Kendrick would risk performing it on his big night.

Kendrick, as exclusively revealed by The U.S. Sun, had no hesitation unleashing the controversial diss track.

The Grammy award-winning star pointedly didn't sing the word "pedophile" in front of a global TV audience of hundreds of millions.

But the 37-year-old had no issue singing the rest of the lyrics, including the now infamous "A minor" putdown, at which point the crowd could be heard singling along.

According to a friend of Kendrick's, the sparkling necklace he wore during the show, which gleamed with 515 diamonds including an encrusted lowercase letter "a," was a further jab at Drake.

The U.S. Sun has been told Kendrick's people were "all caught by surprise"  and "stunned with the detail" when he put on the necklace after receiving it from Eliantte, a private jeweler in New York City, just 24 hours before the game.

The insider says Kendrick spent $1.2 million on the necklace.

"Kendrick succeeded in wanting to pass his message and not be censored," the insider said.

"Everyone thought it was a brilliant way of having his lyrics and message echoed by the masses. It was the kind of genius move only ultra-smart people would make."

The NFL hasn't returned The U.S. Sun's request for comment.

Please...let's look at the sources of this "An NFL Insider", "A Staffer", "An NFL Employee" "League Insider", "2nd NFL Insider",

Give me a break.  If they wanted Wayne, they would've had him.  If they regretted it, they could've booked Wayne as a special guest all the way up to the day before the Super Bowl.  Just trying to make something out of nothing, especially with all these 'anonymous' fake sources.

brother u don’t have to always dig and find ways to overcomplicate things …. this reminds me of the time u said that we don’t know if songs on missionary are timeless hits …

let’s keep it simple here ….. bottom line = he has songs far more popular than the ones he did. doing popular songs that at least the core hip-hop audience know would resonate on a higher level

but he’s actually getting critical acclaim for the performance and people raving about how deep the message was, so what do i know …. i’m just saying from an entertainment point of view, the super bowl has always been a place where the biggest stars perform their biggest hits …… nothin more nothin less

maybe he tried to load up on songs he owns more rights to since he's quasi independent now? hence newer stuff

Nah. Just because a source is unnamed, that doesn't means that the story is fake. Some people just choose to remain in the background. Dj Akademiks leaked Kendrick's playlist before the Super Bowl. Obviously he didn't name specifically who it came from because that would have gotten the person in trouble. It was an anonymous source. Joe Budden went on a goofy rant saying how it was fake and it turned out to be real.

Skip Bayless spoke on the NFL apologizing to Wayne.

The NFL gave RocNation the job of choosing talent for the SuperBowl. JayZ doesn't rock with Wayne. You must not remember the back and forth they had some years back. Wayne even talked about kidnapping Beyonce. There is no way that Wayne would be chosen to do the SuperBowl. On top of that, Wayne put Drake on. He's loyal to Drake and Kendrick is the opp.

I wouldn't be surprised if the NFL did regret having Kendrick there because there has been alot of controversy as well as mixed reviews. The NFL is using music entertainment to divert attention away from all of the politics that had come into play over recent years. You had the police brutality protest, the not standing for the national anthem, then the kneeling and then it got spun into whether or not Kapernick could play. Once they brought in Roc Nation and Jay Z said 'we are past kneeling', all of the political stuff went away. Kendrick's show was political. Exactly what the NFL was trying to get away from.

I posted about the NFL's hesitation a month ago.

NFL allegedly asked Kendrick Lamar to not perform “Not Like Us” at Super Bowl

While Kendrick Lamar’s performance at the Super Bowl halftime show is widely anticipated, the NFL seems hesitant. Especially those with strong political undertones.

I don't think this is bs but, we'll see in the next few days if the NFL comes out with a statement addressing this. If they say it's bs then so be it. I don't care either way. I still haven't seen the performance. Hell, I still haven't seen the Dre/Snoop, 50 and Em one either.
