So many other players in the game with their own self interests - Turkey, Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, then you have the likes of Russia and China, that would pump a lot more resources in, if the balance was tipping a particular way. I don't think the Syrian thing will last, everyone can see exactly what Israel are trying to do - creating so called "buffer zones" in Syria 'past' the Golan Heights is nothing more than trying to grab ( / steal) more land, but if the West supports so called buffer zones, then they should allow Russia to have a safe buffer zone from NATO too. Hypocrisy is now out in the open in full view
