Author Topic: So now that a little time has passed how are we feeling about MISSIONARY ?  (Read 239 times)

The Predator

I cut out the Jelly Roll and Police song.

Instrumental version is dope, i remove that retard sample one and the above two mentioned.

The production on this shit knocks -

Listening to it, i think damn they tried but went with the wrong formula, we wanted a Doggystyle 2, Dre should know that...this was that chance.

The album has that nice polish from Dre, but where was the storytelling? Hot singles? The lyrics or hooks worthy of a quote?

All the elements from Doggystyle were missing, Last Meal remains the closest we got to that.

Putting Doggfather over TBC and The last meal is just as wild as putting missionary over doggfather  :pause:

not even close

The rest of them are just mixtapes to me. With MISSIONARY, Dr. Dre (the executive producer) failed at getting the right people to fit Snoop's persona and evolution, its like he didnt read the room. With all the resources around like Anderson Paak, Problem, Soopafly, for writing purposes and a multitude of music producers, im surprised that they missed the mark and decided to go with ICU.

The instrumentation selection could have been done better. Dj Quik was probably waiting for that call for musical guidance...

I like missionary, but I am in the minority.

The problem is that they should not have labelled it a follow-up to Doggystyle.

All tied for the next spot are Doggfather, last meal, NL top dogg.

All the rest of his albums have more bad/avg songs than good songs imo. Mostly avg. He only has 4 albums that really register for me.

With Snoop Dogg releasing this album, in response to the new question posted, I'd say this - Missionary is not my favorite album by any stretch of the imagination. However, it has a like two or three solid jams. I like the mix on it better on the short mini-movie they put out as compared to the album. Its not the worst album by any stretch, but I wouldn't come back to it. Would I recommend it to a friend? Not as their starter Snoop album other than Doggystyle.

Missionary: 6 out of 10
Snoop's Current Output Lyrically not the beats: 10 out of 10.
Dr. Dre's Beats as of late: 7/8 out of 10.

not feeling Dre's production (mixing is another story) for a long time and this album is the epitome of that. it's servicable at best but none of it is very memorable and some is straight up bad. the vocal side of the production is good as Snoop sounds energetic but that doesn't change the underlying problem (the beats). i don't feel like we'll ever get great music from Dre again at this point.

call me stuck in the past i don't give a fuck, bring back Scott Storch, Batson, Elizondo or some combination of these guys or even someone else but the current squad is musically bland and projects like this will age terribly.
