It was scrapped a while back. After Dre's recent visit with Neil deGrasse Tyson, he was inspired to revisit the project and continue building.

Could be dope if Neil can help source sounds like electromagnetic waves or supernovae from space and figure out a way to fold them into the mix  8)

According to this, it was supposed to drop in 2004: https://hiphophero.com/dr-dre-planets-instrumental-album-unreleased/

So it's probably largely complete. I'm sure there will be a full renovation now; especially with Neil in the mix offering direction with the technicals around astrophysics. Dre was going off pure imagination back then. Now he's got a renowned PhD in his corner, which will more than likely make it way cooler. I'm down with it.  8)

Oh yup, it does. Misread the fuck outta that. 2010 was when Dre mentioned it was in the works, not 2004. Either way, bring it on  8)

Obviously the only way to redeem himself in the eyes of people here is to release another rap album like Chronic talking about smoking weed and being a gangster and he will never do that. Not making instrumental albums about outer space. Just gonna make people think he fell off even more.

Judging by the overwhelming interest and positive reactions from "people here" I'd say you've lost that bet my man lol. I'm a day 1 Dre fan and am genuinely excited about this project. I'd go further and say that any Dre fan is a fan of the 70s music - obviously funk but soul and R&B. And if you like the 70s stuff, you probably like the 60s too. Wanna count all the Grammys and other awards behind that shit? lol. My point is, these type of listeners don't consider "talking about smoking weed and being a gangster" the end-all-be-all; after all, the music that gave rise to Dre was talking about a whole bunch of other stuff - and so was the music that gave rise to that. Give people some credit dude lol - it's a little more sophisticated than you're making it out to be. Like the dude above me said, good music is good music. And being a fan of good music isn't shallow. Not being a fan of it is lol.
