Author Topic: THE HEAD OF STATE SOUNDTRACK BY DJ QUIK & NATE DOGG THAT NEVER DROPPED  (Read 161 times)

who remembers when DJ Quik was supposed to produce the entire Head of State Soundtrack?

It was originally slated to be an album produced by DJ Quik and heavily featuring Nate Dogg as the primary artist ..

The features were to be his in-house crew (AMG, 2nd II None, Hi-C, Suga Free, etc.)

From what I recall, it was completed and then shelved.... nobody ever talks about this one, but it absolutely woulda been an instant classic.

So originally "Head Of State" would be scored by DJ Quik and also include a movie soundtrack. The plans for the soundtrack was to include 12 songs produced by DJ Quik including "Felons". The soundtrack also included a posse track dissing Ja Rule and Murder Ink with DJ Quik going absolutely crazy that makes Dollaz & Sence seem soft. Everything fell apart when the executives wanted to add songs from DMX and Nelly, they also brought in another person to oversee the score of the movie which did not sit well with DJ Quik.

Head Of State - Nate Dogg
What They Think Of You - Nate Dogg & DJ Quik
Let Me Know - Hi-C
Slipped On Ice - Amir
I Hate Me Too - Shawn Anthony
Felons - The Felons (Hi-C, 2Swift, Sugafree & DJ Quik)
Unitiled (Murder Ink Diss) - The Felons (Hi-C, 2Swift, Sugafree & DJ Quik)
Status (Ice Cube Diss) - DJ Quik

You are correct, there is still another 4-6 songs by Nate that have not surfaced that were suppose to go on the soundtrack. To be real Quik (aside from Greddy Greg) has always had horrible management and Quik has suffered for that.  This deal was lost cause Quik should have had someone to tell him let's play ball with the execs and it could lead to more opportunities down the line.

i think a big part of what killed this soundtrack was that the film studio wanted more commercial artists for the movie .. nelly, dmx, jay-z etc.

damn shame

Agree, been trying to convince Quik for the longest to put music out like DJ Muggs has been doing with Soul Assassins Records. I know DJ Muggs assistant he digitized all of DJ Muggs old Dats, Tapes and Master Reels and now DJ Muggs has an endless library of beats to make new projects with. All those projects that DJ Muggs has been putting out are his old unused beats he did in the 90's, that's why they sound so dope.

I haven't watched my DJ Quik: Visualism DVD in 20 years but I believe that was around the same time and Nate Dogg made an appearance in that too. Maybe I'll do a re-watch of both this movie and Visualism.

Damn I had no idea about that Quik heavily featured Nate soundtrack.
I wish Quik would released some of his gems for the fans.

Status... love that song. Heard it on Way 2 Fonky radio back in the day. Sucks it never saw the light of day.

I don't get why Quik wouldn't go in the vaults and release albums like this. With the right marketing, he could make good money... and fans would fall in love with him all over again. Seems like a real missed opportunity.
