My guess, from looking at the road atlas is Compton is the most centered city in the L.A. vicinity.  Making it a hub. Like the center of a wheel being called a "hub".

i thought it was because theres a shitload of rim (hub-cap) shops in compton, its like the big business there. if you want some decent rims, you go to the dub shop, or a smaller retailer.

Yeah I remember Lil Chill has a song "I Was Raised In The Hub" or something and it kept me wondering also...

Yea, the track is called "Raised In The Hub (City Of Compton)". It's the 2nd track on Lil Chill's album and just like all the other tracks on that album is it a dope track...
