New Hope for D.O.C
« on: July 26, 2003, 02:35:25 PM »
The first ever larynx replacement operation was succesfully completed a few weeks ago, and the person is recovering and their voice is returning. The D.O.C.'s voicebox was crushed in a car accident ending his rapping career early, but this new science may be able to help him get his own voice back. If Dre was smart he would help DOC get this done, and then produce his comeback album. Would be amazing for the game to have the Doc back in old form.

i've heard tracks from his first album "nobody does it better" , like "its funky enough" & "the grand finale" , and i'd have to say he's one of the tightest rappers ever, before that accident happened

Operation to construct larynx "went fine"
By Tina Hesman Post-Dispatch
updated: 06/19/2003 02:02 PM

OPERATION TO CONSTRUCT LARYNX "WENT FINE"
ST. LOUIS WOMAN MAY BE ABLE TO SPEAK IN 2 WEEKS
A nine-hour surgery Friday may have restored one St. Louis woman's chance to cheer for the Cardinals.

Amy Hancock, 26, lost her larynx to cancer five years ago. Since then, she has been unable to talk on her own.

Her doctor, Dr. Randal C. Paniello, performed surgery Friday to use skin from Hancock's arm to construct a new voice box.

The technique has been used successfully in Germany, but Hancock is the first patient to undergo the procedure in the United States, Paniello said.

So far, so good, says Paniello.

"The surgery went fine. We had no problems at all. No complications or surprises," he told reporters at a news conference on Saturday morning. In fact, the surgery went faster than expected, he said.

Paniello removed a two-inch-by-three-inch piece of skin from Hancock's left forearm, rolled it into a tube with a flap covering one end and inserted it into her throat to reconnect her windpipe and esophagus. The flap covers the tube so that food or liquids don't enter Hancock's trachea and lungs. Air pressure from her lungs will push the flap open, allowing her to speak in a low, raspy voice if all goes well.

Hancock is recovering well and may be able to leave the hospital by Wednesday. She will recover at the home of her grandmother, Millie Hancock, in Wynoose, Ill.

In about two weeks, doctors will perform X-ray tests to see if the flap is working correctly when Hancock swallows. She may also be allowed to try to speak in her new voice then, Paniello said.

In three weeks, Hancock may be well enough to attempt using a glue-on valve to regulate air flow through the hole in her throat. The surgeon rearranged some of the muscles in Hancock's neck during the extensive surgery to allow the valve to sit flat and form a complete seal over the permanent breathinghole.

Hancock was well enough to use an electronic device to speak to her family on Saturday morning. She had to settle for mouthed words and a thumbs up to her doctor after her surgery Friday.

Hancock's mother, Mary Anne Pittman, a nurse from Flora, Ill., read a statement from Hancock at the news conference. In the statement, Hancock thanked supporters, said she was glad the Cardinals won their Friday night game with the Pittsburgh Pirates, and told Oprah Winfrey that she'd have to share with Paniello the top spot on the list of people Hancock looks up to.

Previous operations to restore Hancock's speech failed, her doctor said. A technique called tracheal-esophageal puncture is often used in people without larynxes to create a connection between the windpipe and esophagus. A plastic valve controls air flow and keeps foreign substances out of the lungs, while allowing air to flow out of the lungs and produce speech. Hancock tried that surgery several times but was never able to talk.

"We're not sure where the hang-up was before," Paniello said. "Something was too tight."

The new technique has a good chance to succeed, he said. The flap of skin covering the connecting tube opens with only half as much air pressure required to open the plastic valve used in the puncture procedure, he said.

Hancock says she's prepared if this new surgery doesn't work but is optimistic that it will. Hancock really had nothing to lose by trying the rare surgery, said her sister Emily Lents, also of Flora. Lents is taking care of Hancock's beloved toy poodle, Macie, while her sister recovers.

"It's not like they'd be taking something away from her. Five years ago, they took something away. They took her larynx," Lents said.

Hancock is looking forward to doing everyday things - such as going through a restaurant drive-through - that are almost impossible with using the electronic device, Pittman said.

"Now she will have her voice - another one," Pittman said. "It doesn't matter to her what it sounds like as long as it's a voice."

If Dre was smart he would help DOC get this done, and then produce his comeback album. Would be amazing for the game to have the Doc back in old form.

THAT would be tight.
