DJ Vlad Mix Tape Update
« on: September 12, 2003, 01:36:23 PM »

Though Tupac Shakur has been gone now for seven years, Death Row Records and Amaru Entertainment have kept his legacy alive by constantly dropping new Pac annual releases. Providing a new twist in Pac's posthumous discography is Oakland-bred DJ Vlad, who is now set to release Tupac Shakur: Rap Phenomenon Pt.2 alongside Dirty Harry and DJ Green Lantern. The trio received accolades earlier this year with the successful release of The Notorious B.I.G: Rap Phenomenon. Just days before the eerily predicted September 13th return of Tupac according to the 7-Year Theory, DJ Vlad took time to speak with SOHH.com on his forthcoming CD and Rap Phenomenon's success.

After 6 relentless months, the brainchild of Vlad, Harry and Lantern is now a collection of Pac's sickest verses over today's premier beats. "Instead of playing a bunch of unreleased 2Pac songs, we decided that this entire mixtape was going to be all remixes that we created, as well as collabos with the best rappers in the game, Vlad told SOHH.com.

Still, meshing today's most elite emcees with their selection of Pac's countless quotables was a challenge in itself. "There's a mix of Pac spitting fire over the "Victory" beat, and we got Busta Rhymes to do the hook. Bounty Killer and Wayne Marshall destroyed a 2Pac song over the "Never Scared" beat. There's a song with Bun-B of UGK over the "Still DRE" beat with Aftermath artist Brooklyn singing the hook," said Vlad who usually drops a new tape monthly. "We had a lot more acapellas [than Biggie] to work with, so there was a lot more remixing. Also, we got to work with a lot of artists on this project from Nappy Roots to Xzibit, Wyclef and a few very special surprises."

Vlad's tapes are so dope that major rappers jack them. Last July, SOHH.com reported that Busta Rhymes borrowed from one of the Notorious BIG Rap Phenomenon tracks and released it as a single. However, Vlad has yet to be credited for the cut. "We never got any credit for it, but a lot of people knew that it came off our mixtape so that was good enough. At the end of the day, that's Hip-Hop - people 'borrow' from each other all the time," Vlad explained.

Vlad is now poised to join the ranks of Clue and Kay Slay whose mixtape success turned into radio slots and plaques. Though they have barely finished Pac's edition, the trio are already planning to hit with another Rap Phenomenon in the near future.

DJ Vlad, Dirty Harry and Green Lanthern's Tupac Shakur: Rap Phenomenon Pt.2 drops September 13, 2003 at DJ Vlad.com. In related Pac news, MTV Films and Amaru Entertainment are set to release Tupac: Resurrection on November 14, 2003. The authorized documentary will feature rare video footage, private photographs as well as excerpts from his journal and personal letters. Meanwhile, avid Pac watchers have their calendars set for Saturday, September 13 - the 7-year anniversary of his death and the predicted day of his anticipated return.
