Can anyone argue against Chuck D being...
« on: September 14, 2003, 08:21:51 PM »
one of the top5 rappers off all time? i can't. Just curious to see if anyone on the board isn't a PE Fan.

Most hip-hop is now keyboard driven, because the majority of hip-hop workstations have loops and patches that enable somebody with marginal skills to put tracks together,...

Unfortunately, most hip-hop artists gravitated towards the path of least resistance by relying on these pre-set patches. As a result, electric guitar and real musicians became devalued, and a lot of hip-hop now sounds the same.

he gets his props for being influencial , but his rhyme scheme is almost like talking in a regular conversation. so it depends on how you rank them based on skill/flow/breath control/lyrics/artistic ability/influence/progressiveness/longevity

top 5 overall rappers IMO when you add all that shit up

1. Pac
2. Ra
3. Cube
4. KRS
5. Biggie

^^ I agree with you...

...however PE kept on top of the game for quite a few years...

...like a few others spitting the harsh reality that most people didnt want to acknowledge... damn i wish there are more like that now but i dont think society at the moment leads to such fire / anger / resentment in lyrics as in anti establishment etc

If not in my top 5 of all time most definatly at no. 6

My top five MCs ever:

1. Rakim
2. KRS-One
3. Nas
4. Big Daddy Kane
5. Notorious B.I.G.

IMO, all of them have better voices and a better flow.  Biggie and Nas are better storytellers.  Rakim & Kane are better lyricists.  The top three have better albums.  Chuck D does have the influence and impact but so does Rakim, KRS-One and Kane, and Nas and Biggie are just better all-around MCs than him.

But then againg I never liked P.E., or Chuck D for the most part.

Yeah i didn't mean that wordplay is a gimmick. I meant that Chuck D doesnt have any need to be complex or anything its straight up reality rap.

Chuck is in my top 5 for sure.
It ain't all about skills or techniques: hip hop ain't about subtracting and adding up. This shit is about feeling and I been feeling Chuckie D since the days of Yo! Bum Rush the Show.
Besides Paris, I don't think anyone can match Chuck's wisdom and maturity. Most of his rhymes or ideas are so on point it makes me wonder if he'll ever be the new leader the black community in the United Snakes of America needs.
The only way you can fuck with me, is in a orgy.
