How else can we give back to the west coast scene?
« on: October 08, 2003, 07:42:14 AM »
Ok... I've been wondering about this for a long time on and off.. I've got 1000s of ideas, some require a lot of time+money tho  ;D

Personally I do the following...

For you guys and myself, I provide this forum to help us chop game, learn & share information.

I'm also involved in dubcnn in a major way.

I've helped IV Life through promoting them here & on dubcnn, and promoting other sites that post IV Life articles+interviews on dubcnn, and have been instrumental setting up their forum and helping with other stuff.

I try help promote the other sites I feel worthy through the 'connected sites' thing, that may have more influence in the future, because with the new board their profile will be elevated.
Once the new forum is done I have something else I want to get back to, we'll see.. I may kick off a variant of that early.

I've helped people like the likwit forum and the 2real ent one when they've come to me for help, i help the other webmasters if I can when they ask for it.

But what else can be done?

Is there something you want to do that you cant?

Are we missing something?

haha.. theres gotta be something...

like one thing i've got in mind is (selectively though) accepting guest articles for dubcnn, so people who havent got the time for running a site, or the skill or whatever to put one up can just submit to us, and we'll publish for them. i've been meaning to do some myself, started a few but never got around to it.

u see i figure theres enough fans of obscure artists out there who could do this to help promote who they follow, hell they could even be updated if they want to keep something up to date.. we could put them up in little batches, run a news story...

people think that'd work?

Sad to see so few replies to this thread - guess after a while we all kinda take the sites and forums for granted (sorry Seer :()

Like the idea of submitted stuff on dubcnn... have to be vetted obviously - no caps lock and all ;)... but you're right about fans of obscure artists - I often thought there should be a stick thread or something for people discussing obscure or oop albums - guess that's what the funk docs are trying to acheive with their forum...

What other ideas are in your list??

Well one of the other ideas was a "west coast faq" but its kinda flopped multiple times, lol

The other was to make a site like imdb.com / allmusic.com thats *just* about the west coast.. but better than them ;)

but I can only do that if i'm employed to do it full time... so if someone (any venture capitalists out there?) has the scrilla wants to back it for a couple years so I can get down and develop the back end database etc.. holla at me!  i need 1/4 a mill  (UK) to get going... (for office space + employ a web designer/artist since i'm not one + another techie or two to help me out + pay accountancy bills etc)

I think the article idea is one we can pump out more easily.. way I see it, if you're say.. a big TQ fan.. (psst mauzip) or say a big fan of someone else... you write an article about a particular aspect or something.. and submit it.. if you're the owner of a fan site about that artist it'd direct more hits your way through us and for those thinking about getting your feet wet and doing more of this kinda stuff online its an easy way to get started, and get feedback before you can set up on ya own.

including me i've tried to get 3 people involved in writing articles for dubcnn, but all have fallen through (i.e. jack shit got done).

lol... I talk to VCs all the fucking time ... bet you I could track down once specialising in IT start-ups... I've spoken to people who reckon investors' scepticism following the tech crash has just about vanished now ;)... plus there's shitloads of cash being sat on by VCs at the moment... sorry, I'm getting carried away ;D But seriously, no reason you couldn't get that off the ground with a business plan...

And when you say articles (on dubcnn), are we talking interviews, opinion pieces, reviews, or all the above?... always happy to put my journalistic skills to use.  ;)

well yeah thats an easy one.. but what about helping it grow..

spreading information, news and providing a place for people to chop game helps sell even more right? (well unless the albums straight wack...)

Seer: those ideas you mentioned sound very interesting/good but I doubt if there'll be something to spend money on that...It would be cool though if they did of course!

"buy west coast albums instead of downloading em" --->Yeah, that's an easy one AND important too.

I think you've done a great job Seer, aswell as guys like Rud & Nima, Lil Jay among others.

I applaud the effort that you guys all put in on your sites, and you guys all do a great job promoting projects and putting the news out for everyone to hear.

As far as doing other things, Im not sure what else could be done, realistically, you promote, bring audio and interviews + all the news....What else could be done ???

I think westcoast artists are being promoted at the wrong time.  They get a lot of promotion early on and then their album just gets delayed and delayed and then they are pretty much forgotten.

examples:

Knoc-turn'al - eazy one to figure out

e-a-ski - about a year ago, we had interviews, songs popping up on mixtapes, etc. I was really excited about him and his album.  Now I have lost most of the excitement and his album has been delayed so much that when it does finally drop most will have forgotten about him.

iv life - same thing as with e-a-ski.  I was pumped on them.  I bought their first bootleg right away.  there was a lot of talk about them, etc.  for 1 year I been waiting on an official album.  I have kinda started to lose interest and faith.

Yeah what Grundy said... what I was thinkin, we should  promote cds before they come out AS WELL AS after they came out, not just until the day they get released. cause alot of people dont go purchase the album the day it gets released cause they never heard about it or they plan to get it later and forget, or they get it once its out, like 1, 2 or 6 months later...So I guess continued promotion for a scheduled time is kinda important to let people know a record dropped cause there isnt any promo for indy records like radio, tv or magazines anyway. like a banner rotation or somthing
