has anyone here ever had a pet rat?

Does anyone here now if they are good pets to have?
I been doing some online research about having rats for pets, but still have to raise some questions about cleanliness. They have even to be noted as more intellegent then dogs and cats, also affectionate and very clean.

Has anyone here had a pet rat? If so how was that experience.

i guess he has a real bad phobia about rats and mice.. hamsters... and those little ginny pigs...  

i am still concidering getting one though.. but first i would like to know.. how clean they are...

500 bucks for a pet deposit fee... to have them in the appartment.. for cats and dogs... both...

if there is any type of animal that i hate... it is a damn bird... i hate birds... every since my grandmother had one of those yellow and white birds.. with orange cheeks... i really hated that damn bird.. and i should have feed it to my cat... the cat my dad made me leave behind.. to strave... since he didnt want to pay money to have it put up for adoption.. like he did for my little puck puck.. who i miss so dearly... i just want something cuddling and cute.. and they say rats are affectionate...
