5 FOOTAZ]
What may have seemed to have taken a lifetime is finally here: The arrival of the debut album from the 5 Footaz "Lifetime." Those who may consider them newcomers to the game better think again. Ka-Bar, Cobra Red, Knehi, Jah Skillz and Neb Luv are certainly no strangers to the rhyme. These sistas started the crew in 1994 gracing the mic at underground spots such as L.A.?s mecca of hip hop...The Good Life. They?ve definitely had their share in takin? out emcees who dare to join the cipher. It all began when Jah Skillz met Warren G. at a MC Lyte concert back in the early nineties. "I snuck into the V.I.P. room," explains Jah. "I started rappin? for him and a few other people." The next day Jah received a phone call from Warren and they started hanging out together in the studio. She touched down on a cut called "Super Soul Sista," a song from Warren G.?s debut album the "Regulate? The G-Funk Era." Soon, Jah Skillz met up with fellow rhymer Neb Luv while in college. The duo started rapping together and ended up on the Budweiser Superfest tour, which included heavyweights like R. Kelly, Heavy D, Coolio, Da Brat and their mentor Warren G. While on tour, the girls were featured in the hip-hop documentary "The Show." After coming off the road, Jah and Neb thought it would be cool to start an all female crew of skilled emcees. Neb knew two sistas who would fit the bill. Their names? Cobra Red and Knehi. Ka-Bar used to see the girls around town at various underground spots. "We met up at a party and started doing freestyle sessions," says Ka-Bar. She became the last member to join the group and The 5 Footaz became a strong force to be reckoned with. Warren G. embraced the 5 woman team and signed them to his G-Funk label on Def Jam Recordings. "I came up with the name 5 Footaz," Neb says proudly. "I was listening to a Tribe Called Quest record and heard Phife say ?Phife the 5 Footah?. We?re all about 5?4", 5?5" so that?s how I came up with the name." Each member brings their own ingredient to the mixture of flavorable rhyme-sayers. "Sensuality. I am the sex symbol of the group," explains Cobra Red. "The home wrecker. On stage I?m hype. I bring the energy." Knehi who is known for burnin? mics from Los Angeles to San Bernardino, California brings it hardcore. "People say I?m the little gangsta of the group," says Knehi. "I?m not. That?s just my delivery. I bring realness to the group." Ka-Bar, whose name comes from a knife used in the military strictly for battle, comes off as the quiet one. Don?t be fooled. She is the calm before the storm. "I bring the wisdom," explains Ka-Bar. "I try through my music to change perceptions and outlooks on life." NebLuv who is sometimes referred to as "the rock star," brings things to another level. "I?m wild on stage. I don?t have any limitations," says Neb. Her high energy performances compel you to bob your head and wave your hands in the air. Although these lovely ladies have had their share of bumps in the road, Jah Skillz still manages to keep a positive attitude. "I feel I add humor," says Jah, whose witty rhymes are guaranteed to bring about a smile. Struggle is no stranger to the 5 Footaz. After their first deal on the G-Funk/Def Jam label fell through, they were hit hard with a big dose of disappointment. But nothing would stop these go-getters from fulfilling their dreams. "We are 5 friends that have been through a lot of bullshit in the industry," Neb confesses. "Our natural chemistry and love for the music have kept us strong." Things can get pretty tough being female rappers in a male dominated genre. "We gotta come that much tighter," says Cobra Red, who has recurring roles on MTV?s Lyricist Lounge. "Most guys try to overlook the skills and just wanna see some skin." These 5 MC?s exude more than sex appeal. They have gone flow for flow with many of their male counterparts and always come out gaining the respect that they truly deserve. The girls keep their rhymes fine tuned by making rounds to their favorite undergrounds spots, local clubs and anywhere there is an open mic. The studio is their second home. They gained worldwide recognition when they were invited to do a cut for the "Set It Off" soundtrack called "The Heist." That joint blew up the airwaves of commercial and college radio all over the country, establishing the Footaz as a mainstay in hip-hop. Their new album "Lifetime" on G-Funk/Restless Records is appropriately named. On the title cut, each member goes deep and bares all. Sharing their life experiences over hypnotic rhythms and heart pounding beats, captures the listener and brings them inside their world. "Release" featuring Xzibit, is a fo? sho? head banger. These females may have ran into a few obstacles but they keep it movin. The cut "Smashing," which features the homies Kurupt and Warren G., is laced with that classic G-Funk flava that only Warren G can hook up. The 5 Footaz dwell in Southern Cali and stay true to that West Coast sound on "Bang Baby Bang" (prod. by Warren G). Blessed with the gift to paint pictures with words, these artists put you right in the middle of the action on the first single Heist II. The third 5 Footaz album is in the works with production by the original hit maker DJ Rectangle. Warren G will also add his skills and the Footaz plan on getting behind the boards. No release date set yet. Stay tuned for more info right here or visit Neb´s website over at
