who else thinks "speakerboxx/tlb" sucks?
« on: January 08, 2004, 11:42:21 AM »
i'm so sick of hearing people talk about how great this album is. in my opinion, it's by far their worst effort. there are maybe 3 songs on speakerboxx worth listening to and only about 4 or 5 on the love below. out of 30-something tracks there are only about 10 worth listening to, at most. and all these critics and people talking about "it's the album of the year." bullshit. i'm not impressed with it at all. they should do joint projects again - enough of this solo shit....anyone else agree?

I kinda agree and disagree ;D

I'm sure Big Boi and Dre both knew when they released it that this album (these albums?) would split the hip-hop community like no other. To some extent they must have made it to be different.

It's almost a record you have to either love or hate. This is not an album you can 'not mind' about ;) But it's also an album that's difficult to convince someone to love if they say they hate it. It's just too fucking out-there.

Personally I love it. I think it's one of the best records I've bought this year. But I can sympathise entirely with others who paid their hard-earned cash for it and were left thinking 'wtf?' ;)

I don't agree, "Speakerboxx" was a great rap record and "TLB" was on sum other shit, but mostly pretty creative. But it's like Lord Funk said, it's the love it or hate it type album and even tho I personally luved it i do hope theyll get together again and make an actual Outkast album and not two solo records

i guess what bothered me about "tlb" is that everything seems so simple on it. i mean, that guitar riff on "hey ya" and the drums are pathetically childish, yet, it's the "single of the year."

plus, his lyrics ruin half the songs for me: like "i know you like to think yo shit don't stink/....roses really smell like poo poo" - c'mon, that's just stupid. who wants to hear about roses smelling like poo poo? and "happy valentines day"? weak. everyone says how "deep" and "genius" tlb is, yet it's so simple and retarded that people think it's artistic.....i'm just not feelin the corny stuff i guess

I don't think it's genius. Hell, it ain't that deep. But it's different, it's creative, it's honest. It's definately artistic, but fuck it, so is Big Boi's disc.

In XXL Jay-Z said: "Dre's CD is his truth. You can feel it." He's right. Dude just did what he felt like doing. Even if the CD makes you feel sick to your stomach to listen to, you can't knock the man for having the balls to make it. You could count the major label hip-hop acts willing to make such a brave move on one fucking hand.

yeah i dont know what all the fuss is about they got a few cool tracks but this was always my argument that for a double cd to only have like 5 or so tracks that are tight is not verry good...i just dont see how this cd is so big

Big Boi's album was NOT good. He should've took more time on it. It sounded forced.

Dre's album was wonderful. I don't skip one track on it. You have to like music to like that. You have to have an open mind. Dre's disc was enough to make both albums one of the best of the year.

i wouldn't say he had 'the balls to make it' - he knew damn well that if he said three words on the whole album, people were gonna buy it no matter what. he didn't have to do shit, didn't have to put in any effort for this album whatsoever because people were gonna eat it up. if i could make a record and know damn well i was gonna get paid for it no matter what i said, i don't think i woulda put that much effor into it, and maybe i'd say some real simple stuff, and some real silly metaphors and people would think it's profound and artistic and genius and (all the other adjectives they use to describe tlb). i don't think it's what people make it out to be, you know? i don't think it's him, and i don't think it's really artistic. maybe he just wanted to see how far he could go before people started saying 'wait a minute, i've heard kindergarten kids say more profound stuff than this' or 'i've heard children play better music than this.'

i love music. all music. i've got probably one of the most eclectic album collections out of anyone i know. i listen to everything. i'm not saying that i don't still listen to this disc. there are some tracks on there that i do love, and i listen to them. i'm just saying i think it's their worst record, and they should have worked together on it.
