See, Mixtapes have always been flowing around. But, it was rare that artists or crews would do mixtapes. It used to just be DJs compiling songs and freestyles. The South was the first place that I start hearing crew Mixtapes.  It was the first place that I started hearing the song Remakes(you know, jacking the beat and re-working the hook and what not). But anyway, people see it as free promotion. You're not gonna get sued for a Mixtape, they can do virtually what they want.

The modern day style mixtapes are completly pointless. They are just full of tracks that weren't good enough to make the actual album of the artist, wack remakes of other people's tracks, and the occasional freestyle. To top it all off the "DJ" on the majority of these tapes seems to do nothing but scream like a demented monkey over the best parts of the track. How 50 got signed off of his mixtapes I don't know, and that Snoop - Welcome to the Church mixtapes have all been perfect examples of how bad these mixtapes are.

The only mixtapes I ever fuck with, are ones by proper DJs, who actually mix stuff together well, and actually do some scratching, letting their DJ skills do the talking rather than their voices. Stuff released by anyone in the Beat Junkies crew, DJ Format, The Xecutioners, etc.

And Extra Large, what did you mean by saying that the Dilated Peoples albums sound like mixtapes anyway?

Mixtapes are good....you can drop music without worrying about bullshit label politics etc... also it gives the artist an idea of what fans wanna hear on the actual album. Id rather see a shitload of mixtapes everywhere then crappy ass albums on the shelves.

Plus when a artist flows over someone elses beat it gives u an alternative to the original...and it also puts a rappers skills on the spot, cause the production isnt their own
