i'm seriously strugglin trying to find interesting topics about the west coast, but i don't know if it's just me or music isn't really ALL THAT. the last time i felt like this was when i was in college downloading all the free music i could find but finally got bored and couldn't find enough GOOD rap music to download. i guess westcoast rap and rap in general is just starting to bore me....i mean, i still listen to all the oldies (ha ha - oldies are less than 10 years old) and still check out the OG artists, but rarely do i give any new artists a chance. i feel like i've heard it all before and nothing really surprises me or opens my eyes any more.

i was following westcoast rap growing up in california for the rise and fall of death row, the rise of the bay and sactownup to the climactic days when pac was alive and ultimately his death. after pac died, i feel like i'd give other regions a chance and was feelin the south with outkast, goodie mob.....then feelin a bit of the east with wu tang, biggie, jay z, nas.....even dmx sparked my interest to begin with.......i started listening to quik a lot later than most, and really started listenin to him in 98'.

but nowadays, it seems like it's all the same to me. nothing is ever going to be the same as that first time i heard 'big pimpin'....and it's not necessarily because i think new stuff sucks, it's just that it doesn't capture my attention like the old stuff.

i bet a lot of you 'new listeners' or younger cats aren't going to agree with me, but i bet some of you older cats feel me on this one. nothin really impresses me anymore.

there's only a handful of cats that i enjoy that came after 96', like dmx, and eminem, but for the most part, since pac died, i've ventured into a lot of other types of music. i've been even listenin to operas and classical music. for some reason i still haven't picked up country, but i listen to a lot of old rock music too.

you call me a pac dickryder or whatever, but i would highly suggest some of you 'rapcats' try to listen to some other forms of music once in a while. you might learn a lot. i got a homie that was all about that gangsta rap, a real smart dude that wanted to be a gangsta so bad that he pulled a driveby on some guys. he got arrested and did 2 years in chino. i saw him for the first time in 2 years a couple months ago and dude is a changed man. he came out, still listenin to that gangsta music, but he's finally opened his eyes and ears to other forms....

i guess all i'm tryin to say is that the older i get, the less i listen and care about rap music

*getting prepared for bad karma*

Shit. Hip Hop, on all coasts, ain't all it's cracked up to be. I don't see why the west always gets singled out. Rap bores me too, but so does everything else in life.

What iz it...

It's not just the West that has fallen off, but rap in general. The West gets singled out due to having the greatest drop in sales out of all the coasts (east, west, south, midwest), especially since Pac has passed.

Everyone on the east wants to sound like Jay-Z, Nas, or Jadakiss...

Niggaz in the south is niggaz in the south...They don't give a fuck if anybody doesn't like their music outside of the south...

Bottom line is the best thing to do is look out for new artists...The west coast was built on gangsta shit so its a little unfair to say, "stop doing gangsta shit"...Everyone has taken our style, dress, and slang only to turn it against us...

Fuck rap...I'm on that mosh pit---rock shit

I feel you JT, been feelin like that for the past year or so. I now only buy like one rap cd a month now probably less, and usually they get tired pretty quick or are just crap to begin with.

Still some good music coming out, but yea on the whole rap music and west coast rap in particular have become verrrrry stagnant, monotonous and on the whole immature. These days I'd much rather listen to some India Arie or some older soul and R&B, some grown folks music, than all these goofy kids (oh and master p) talking about womens asses and shooting people.

Two exceptions in rap though are Pac and Quik. Never get tired of them.

Rap hasn't been the same to me since 97 and the death of Pac and Big and the rise of Puffy and Master P *groan*. Before 97, from 87 - 96, this shit was so much fun, waiting for a new tape to come out, rolling around in the bucket with my boys freestyling, playing the music all loud and shit, going to open mics and all these underground events and shit. I was deep into the shit back then.

I still got love for hip hop and always will, but for me, the feelings aren't on the same level as they were in my teens and early 20's. I don't get as excited about new acts anymore and everything basically sounds the same to me now.

I always try to hold out hope for a change. In late 99, when the Chronic 2001, Streetz is a Mutha and Rap Life all dropped on the same day, and a few months later with Balance and Options, the Konnektid Project, Nonfiction and Restless dropping, I was hoping to see a renaissance in west coast hip hop but that didn't happen. When Nas dropped Stillmatic in '01, I was hoping to see a renewed focus on lyricism, but that didn't happen. I still have hope that things will turn around, but it's dwindling.

I don't know if the music is worse now or I'm just getting older but I miss the early and mid 90's era of hip hop music terribly.

I second that comment about Pac and Quik. Their music will always move me.

Thats well said bro...I think hip hop is such a competitive and rapidly changing art form, that once you catch on to the speed it moves at, thats when you start losing the interest you once had.  Like Midas said, we need fresh young talent out there, but whether youre a rookie or an OG, I think the most important thing is that, creatively speaking, artists need to just make music that sounds good to them, fuck making shit intentionally to get radio or club spins...In the end I think thats how you make classics and thats how you garner true respect.
