Do you think kurupt used to write most of daz lyrics?
« on: March 11, 2004, 10:10:27 AM »
I do, and snoop probably wrote a bit too.  back in the good ole days of death row.  Just listen to daz early lyrics and then compare them to his last 2 albums.

I've thought the same thing...

...Daz never got his lyrical skills back after Dogg Food.

Mind you, given Kurupt's lyrics over recent years it wouldn't surprise me if someone was helping him out too back then...?

Don't forget that The D.O.C helped out a lot with lyrics on early Death Row stuff... in that interview with Tha Formula he said that even when he didn;t actually write the rhymes he was usually looking over Snoop or whoever's shoulder and telling them what worked and what didn't...

kurupts also got worse since dogg food but i think he still wrote lyrics for daz years after that. on the song bitch make me rich with too short there are 2 versions. 1 with daz and 1 with kurupt. i just noticed the other day that they both have the same verse word for word so kurupts probably been writing for him untill he signed with tha row again.

does kurupt write for gail gotti?   i'd buy that.

fuck it.  daz does sound like kurupt on some of the older shit.

2001.  kurupt, threat & bad azz.
bad azz spits some ad libs on it, so maybe he's credited for that.   it does sound like something threat would write (threat has spit similar lines in other songs).  he also shouts out t-lee and la zuu on that track.   a kurupt influence in the third verse especially wouldn't surprise me either.  snoop's flow is pretty tight on that track, one of my favorites.  i think it's cool that snoop gave the credit where it was due.

i wouldn't be surprised if threat helped out on snoop bounce, although he isn't credited there.  but snoop does shout out la zuu on that one and threat spits some subliminal shit on pooh's album.

technique is credited on me & my doggz but not 2001.

RBX helped a lot on the Chronic & Doggystyle stuff, too.  RBX and the DOC would kind of help everybody with their flow and switch words around and shit, and Dre in the studio would give people suggestions on how to make it sound better.  The reason they were all tight is because they were all family helping each other.  Kurupt wasn't writing Daz's shit, Daz was writing his, Snoop was writing Snoop's, Kurupt was writing Kurupts, etc, and then, all dozen of them or whatever were helping each other polish shit up.  So the reason they sound similar, is because it's more of a product of the entire Deathrow Squad then it is individual shit, even though they wrote most of it individually.  It's got more of a deathrow sound than a 'kurupt' or 'daz' sound.

It's actually a great way to do it, Motown built a dynasty doing that.  They had a group of songwriters who wrote songs, a group of producers who produced them, Smokey Robinson writing the lead singles for groups, guys helping them with choreography, etc. etc.  Churned out hit after hit for decades.  The dungeon family kinda does it like that now, but not on such a large scale.  With them they're just kinda tight and hang out together, and get shit accomplished similarly, where it all sounds good.  That might have changed now though, they're kinda fragmented...

OH, and the reason that shit don't work with the DPG's anymore, is because at the time, the DOC's career had just been cut short, everybody knew he was the shit, he was like a fuckin' livin legend, and they all had respect for him.  They couldn't say "Man, fuck you, you can't write better than me", because they knew he COULD.  Snoop couldn't say "Fuck you, you don't know how to flow" because they knew he could, he just couldn't phsyically because of the wreck.  So he was like a huge factor in it.  Plus, on top of that, everybody @ deathrow was nobodys, and Dr. Dre was huge as fuck, so they all respected his opinion, too, and he owned the company.  So Dre would tell Snoop "Man, it'll sound better if you do it like this" and Snoop would go for it.  The D.O.C. would tell him to say it like this instead of like that, and he'd take the suggestion because he had so much respect for him.  It was just a healthier atmosphere.

Now, Snoop's a mega mega megastar, and ain't nobody got the balls to tell him if something sucks.  He ain't gonna listen, he'll say "Fuck you, Bad Azz, I've sold 50 million records motherfucker!!!".

What about Rage?? She's allways been a dope lyricist and I'm sure she also helped writing in the old Death Row days.Considering how she seems to have remained on the same level she might not actually have received much help herself. I'm sure she co-wrote though. PERHAPS she was the secret behind Kurupts dope lyricism of the day! :o :o ;)
