I was just wondering about this after reading about Rakim leaving Aftermath.  I've heard too many different stories about the greatest producer of all-time.

-Dre's always bragging about how... "Snoop and I finished the whole B side of Doggystyle over 2 nights and a bottle of hennesey"

-"Em and I recorded the tracks for the Slim Shady LP 4 hours on each song on extacy" (Rolling Stone May 99).

-Knocturnal said, "Dre loved me cause I was quick and wrote and recorded the tracks I did with him for 2001 and the Wash right there in the studio, quick".

-Dre said, "I really only spent 11 days for my part of the Firm album, I wish I could have spent more time on it, but I was busy".

-Then you have all these people claiming that Dre is a workaholic.  Dre said something like, "I'm not going to let anybody come in there and outwork me".  And him and Rakim had issue's over time constraints and scheduling.

-Xzibit said, "I picked out a few tracks from Dre to use for the Restless LP so I've been listening to them on my walkman and writing lyrics".

-I think Rakim said something like Dre expected him to walk in the studio and come up with dope material right there on the spot but that he didn't really work like that.

-Then everyone knows about all the accusations of ghost producing.

-Dre's such a hard worker but yet he only releases Aftermath albums once a year or so.

-Snoop always talks about how Dre coaches him through his vocals.

-Kurupt said Dre is a good producer cause he knows how to mix the songs.

**************

I'm confused.  Who is Dre really in the studio?  Is he hardworking or does he rush through everything?   Is he even there half the time?  Does he give rappers time to write or does he rush them through it?  Is he just great at mixing a half finished track?  Does he just send them a track and let them handle it?   Is he all of this things?

What do ya'll think?

lots more people have said that dre keeps them up all night making them redo lyrics, coaching and trying to perfect that shit.

warren said "lookin at you" took a month coz dre wanted it right..

Yeah, so then which is it?  Does he rush through everything or is he hardworking.  Some say he keeps messing with it till he gets it right.

it definetely depends on his feelings for the tracks ... but look at Seer's answer ;)

Maybe it depends on however he pictures the track in his mind.  But then there's other quotes about him pushing the artists to be creative and take the track wherever it needs to go.  So which is it?

its perfectionism.

Yeah, but do ya'll realize how many different stories are out there?  Anyway, since ya'll are just dropping your opinions I'm going to drop mine.

I think that since he's already proved himself, like he's said in so many of his songs, "I don't need your respect, I don't need to make another album, bitch, I don't got to do shit!"   Dre, I think just works when he pleases.  He doesn't feel like he really needs to release another record the rest of his life and he'd be happy.  He just does it as a hobby, but he doesn't release a product unless it is superior, because he is competitive and doesn't want to put any stains on his legacy.  He would rather just not release something than add a stain to his legacy.

^ thats another aspect...

sure he recorded 900 tracks for 2001... but how many sucked major ass?

its also about quality control!  and being able to tell whats good is important.

also, did you know dre chose the first 8 or so tracks on the first eastsidaz LP ?

Interesting, I always thought that album had a real good feel to it, kind of a cohesiveness that made it unique. Now I understand why. props on that 'seer....
