RIAA Loss Report Contradicts Nielsen Sales Record

An interesting blurb at Ars Technica referencing a Kensei News article points out that Nielsen's Soundscan (Which tracks retail point-of-sale numbers for the music industry) shows a 10% increase in sales from Q1 2003 to Q1 2004. The RIAA has recently reported drops in revenue from last year, citing online piracy as the main problem. The crux of the issue? The RIAA hasn't been talking about sales or revenue in terms of sales to consumers or money generated via those sales. The RIAA talks about losses in terms of number of units shipped to retail outlets. The article points out plenty of problems with this (and reasons why we are seeing the trend), but it is fairly obvious that the RIAA is not reporting the most 'useful' numbers to the public."

RIAA told you Americans: "The music industry doesn't sell that much records any more, and it's all because of online piracy"
At the same time, the REAL statistics say that sales are UP 10% !!
All this to justify RIAA's warfare on random citizens downloading some music.. (Aka. Their own costumers)

Maybe not.
For my own case, I know I started buying a lot more CD's and DVD's after I started downloading music & movies.
It's probably the case for many people, and it's the best way there is to spread the word/get free promotion/etc.
How many people would know about the Game, if it wasn't for the net ?
How many people would know that Ras Kass is alive if it wasn't for the net ? etc. etc.

What's really hurting the sales, is the super-bootleggers flooding the streets with 99% perfect copies @ $5, or whatever price they take..
Greece is a good example, 50% of the music sold there is pirate copies.
Stop them, instead of people downloading music for personal use.

LOL please.  Go to a flea market, and tell Eminem the stacks and stacks of bootleg cd's they're selling of his are helping promote him.  Tell R. Kelly that without the guys at the flea market selling car loads of Cd's they burned off the internet, he'd be nobody.  Tell Dre all those people that downloaded Chronic 2001 tracks are giving him more money and helping his career.  It doesn't matter if people buy the cd for 5 bucks at the flea market, or download it themself, that's still 1 less cd! How the fuck can you say that it's alright to download it, but it ain't alright to buy it at a flea market?  Are you drunk?

I steal every fuckin' album I want, with RARE exceptions.  The only time I buy an album, is when I like the artist so much I feel a personal connection with them, and want good things for them, so I buy the album... and I'll tell you 1 thing, there ain't a single fuckin' rapper on THAT list anymore... maybe I'll buy a new Dre record if it ever comes out, or a new Ice Cube record.  The rest of them, fuck 'em... it's their money or mine, I'll gift myself, thank you very much.  This is the attitude of *MOST people.  NOBODY's buying shit anymore.  Sure, they still sell millions of CD's, but when Michael Jackson was hot in the early 80's, he sold 50 million copies of 1 record.  The Hottest, HOTTEST acts of the last decade have only sold 12.  You tell me something hasn't changed.  People are downloading and stealing shit left and right, anyway they can, wherever they can, however they can, as cheap as they can.

There was bootleggers long before the internet came along dumbass..
It's not a new problem.

And tell me another thing, why doesn't RIAA focus on the street bootleggers who profit big $$$ on bootlegging, instead of the home downloaders who doesn't make a dime of it..

I'm happy we don't have lame ass corrupt moneyhungry companies like RIAA in Norway..
